We asked our Friends one simple question: What’s your favorite thing about school? 💭

Their answers had one thing in common: PLAY.

At Friends Center for Children, play isn’t just fun. It’s how children build confidence, friendships, creativity, and a lifelong love of learning. From outdoor games to imaginative play and hands-on exploration, every day is filled with opportunities to grow.

Looking for an early childhood program where your child can learn, play, and thrive? Enrollment is open for our various locations across New Haven.

This , we’re celebrating Juneteenth with a few reading recommendations ahead of this Friday’s holiday!

Emotional Well-Being Literacy & Curriculum Coordinator Aundrea Tabbs-Smith (Aundrea Tabbs Smith) shares a brief history of Juneteenth and highlights All Good in the Hood by Dwayne Reed (Dwayne Reed | Keynote Speaker | Educator | Author |), Juneteenth (a We Celebrate book) from the Little Feminist Book Club, and Juneteenth by Van G. Garrett (Van G. Garrett).

Together, these titles explore the many ways people celebrate Juneteenth and how communities come together to honor this important holiday.

Comment what you’re reading this week to celebrate! 📚

Last week, Friends Center traveled to Battle Creek, Michigan, to join our partners at Pulse for their very first Furnishing Day — and what a milestone it was to witness. 🏡

Pulse’s First Home, First Teacher initiative became real in the most tangible way: Volunteers and community members coming together to prepare a home, and welcoming the first two educators through the door.

Seeing this model take root in a new community is exactly why we do this work. What started in New Haven is becoming something larger: A growing, collaborative movement rooted in dignity, stability, and genuine care for the educators who care for children.

We’re so grateful to Pulse, Community Action Agency of Battle Creek (Community Action of South Central Michigan), Neighborhood Incorporated of Battle Creek (Neighborhoods Inc.), Battle Creek Community Foundation (BattleCreekCommunityFoundation), and the educators for stepping into this program as it begins to grow. Congratulations to the whole Battle Creek team — this is just the beginning. 🎉

This spring, we’re choosing language that opens doors instead of closing them. Language that affirms, includes, and makes space for every child to be seen and heard.

When you support Friends Center for Children, you’re helping build classrooms where every word matters, and every child belongs.
