Calling all New Haven parents! Beginning on September 30, the Yale Institute of Sacred Music will launch a new 12-week after-school visual arts pilot program for New Haven middle-school students in grades 6–8. Meeting on Wednesdays from 4:30–5:45 p.m. at Immanuel Baptist Church, 1324 Chapel Street, the free program will give students a welcoming, hands-on environment in which to experiment with visual art materials, develop creative skills, and explore their own ideas through making.

The Yale Institute of Sacred Music is thrilled to announce the revival of the Yale ISM Review, returning after a five-year hiatus with Dr. Loraine Enlow as its new editor. An interdisciplinary scholar and practitioner whose work bridges academia, parish life, and performance, Dr. Enlow brings a wide-ranging perspective to the Review as it begins this new chapter as a biannual digital publication exploring sacred music, worship, and the arts.

The relaunch issue, "Community: Communal Life, Justice, and Connection", asks how worship and the sacred arts can help build just communities. Teresa Morgan considers community as an art realized through performance; Karen Campbell explores lament and healing in Northern Ireland; Jon Seals examines sacred space, art, and ecology; Justine Orlovsky-Schnitzler explores communal singing; Dave Bjorlin considers protest, lament, and praise; and Emmett Price reflects on invitation and mutual accountability in worship.

The Yale Institute of Sacred Music's Black Sacred Arts Conference was held this summer in Ghana in partnership with the Institute of African Studies at the University of Ghana, Legon.

The theme “Religions at the Crossroads: Africa’s Creative and Spiritual Heritage” brought together nearly 40 speakers and performers from Africa, the Americas, and Europe to explore how ritual and the arts shape the intertwined traditions of African traditional religions, Christianity, and Islam.

All are welcome to join us on October 2 (Yale Humanities Quadrangle) and October 3 (Farnam Memorial Gardens) for All Trees Bear Witness: Colonial Histories, Climate Breakdown, and Sonic Experiments in Silvic Storytelling, a two-part program which explores narratives of colonialism and climate change through the biodata sonification of witness trees—woody subjects who have experienced significant events in history.

The program includes the premiere of musician-folklorist Daniel Bachman’s film, The Witness Tree; a discussion moderated by convener Tyler Mark Nelson with two multidisciplinary artists of Virginian roots—cultural worker Cliff Chambliss, III, and scientist Willow Gatewood; and an outdoor biodata sonification workshop led by Willow Gatewood inviting participants to listen to the life processes and storytelling of New Haven trees.

Free and open to the public, but registration is required (and limited in the case of the workshop). Co-sponsored by the Institute of Sacred Music’s Religion, Ecology, and Expressive Culture Initiative and Yale Environmental Humanities.

All are welcome to join us for a concert of organ music by Francesco Cera performed on Marquand Chapel's Krigbaum Organ. The concert is part of the Great Organ Music at Yale series and will be held on Sunday, September 27 at 7:30 p.m. Repertoire includes works by Frescobaldi, Trabaci, De Maque, Salvatore, Rossi and Pasquini.

Join us on Saturday, September 26 at 7:30p.m. in Battell Chapel, as principal conductor Grete Pedersen leads Yale Schola Cantorum in the group's first concert of the season, featuring performances of Dieterich Buxtehude's Membra Jesu nostri and Eivind Buene's Untitled (Horizons).

Free and open to the public.

Composed by Dieterich Buxtehude in 1680, Membra Jesu nostri, BuxWV 75, is a cycle of seven cantatas. Each cantata addresses a part of Jesus' crucified body: feet, knees, hands, side, breast, heart and face.

Composed by Eivind Buene, Untitled (Horizons) is a choral work in three movements, with text fragments derived from the great tradition of classical music for choir, chosen for their ability to say something that rings true in our world today. They do not present any coherent 'story' through the piece, but convey an emotional landscape through sound and associations. The late paintings of Mark Rothko have been important in the composition process, where the music echo his vibrant layers of color split by a lingering horizon.
