🏆 Hall of Fame Spotlight: Walter Camp, HGS 1876

Before becoming known as “The Father of American Football,” Walter Camp got his start on the field at Hopkins Grammar School.

A three-year football letterwinner and team captain at Hopkins, Camp went on to star at Yale and become one of the most influential figures in the history of American football. His work developing many of the rules and structures that shaped the modern game earned him his enduring nickname.

Camp will be inducted as part of the inaugural class of the Hopkins Athletics Hall of Fame! 🏈🏆

The Class of 2027 gathered bright and early in the stands of Smilow Field last week for the annual Senior Sunrise! 🌅

The tradition gives seniors a chance to watch the sunrise over the Hill together, marking one of the first of many “lasts” of their final year at Hopkins. ❤️

🎉 Congratulations to 13 Hopkins seniors who have been named Semifinalists in the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program!

John B., Beckett E., Henrietta H., John K., Alexander M., Noah N., Thomas P., Calder R., Lukas R., Theodore S., Nikhet V., Yutong X., and Vivian Z. earned recognition among more than 16,000 academically talented high school seniors nationwide.

This marks the second consecutive year that Hopkins has celebrated double-digit National Merit Semifinalists. The 13 seniors now have the opportunity to advance to the Finalist stage and compete for National Merit Scholarships.

Congratulations to our students on this outstanding academic achievement!♥️

🏆 Hall of Fame Spotlight: 1982–1983 Girls Basketball Team

The 1982–1983 Girls Basketball Team made Hopkins history with an incredible 18-1 season, winning the New England Prep School Championship. To this day, they remain the only Hopkins basketball team, boys or girls, to accomplish the feat.

Led by Coach Jim Bucar, known to many as “Papa,” and captains Lisa Haury ’83 and Cathy Laydon ’83, the Hilltoppers also won the Kingswood Invitational Tournament that season.

This historic team will be inducted as part of the inaugural class of the Hopkins Athletics Hall of Fame! 🏀🏆

Yale University Professor of History Ned Blackhawk visited Hopkins to kick off the 2026–2027 Speaker Series, centered on this year’s theme, “America at 250.”

Blackhawk, an enrolled member of the Western Shoshone and author of the National Book Award-winning The Rediscovery of America, invited students to broaden their understanding of American history by considering the experiences, contributions, and continuing presence of Native peoples.

“Making visible these communities is, in fact, a form of broadening us at 250,” Blackhawk shared.

We are excited to officially announce the School’s first-ever Athletics Hall of Fame Class!

The inaugural class, formed thanks to a large number of nominations from the Hopkins community, honors more than a century of athletic achievement. Inductees were selected among student-athletes, coaches, teams, administrators, and community contributors from Hopkins School and its predecessor institutions, Hopkins Grammar School (HGS) and Day Prospect Hill School (DPH).

On September 11, Dean of Students Lars Jorgensen ’82 and Associate Director of Advancement Services Dan Junkins took on the 110 Floors Challenge in remembrance of the first responders who climbed the World Trade Center towers on September 11, 2001.

“I immediately thought this would be a great way to honor the first responders and to reflect on the losses we all shared on that day,” Jorgensen said.
