The Children’s Preschool is a cooperative community of children, families, and teachers.

The Children’s Preschool is a community that celebrates the joy, curiosity, and wonder of childhood while helping each child thrive. Renowned for its team of expert, devoted teachers and nurturing family atmosphere, the school was established in 1971 as a parent-teacher cooperative. As a parent-teacher cooperative, we welcome, benefit from, and depend upon the time and talents of family members. T

Today, February 9, Alice Walker, acclaimed novelist, short story writer, poet, activist, teacher, mother, lover of humans, animals, and trees - celebrates her 81st birthday. The winner of both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award for her 1982 novel, "The Color Purple", she is also the author of four other novels, ten volumes of poetry, and dozens of short story and essay collections. Alice Walker has been instrumental in discovering (and rediscovering) other Black women writers, past and present, most notably Zora Neale Hurston, whose unmarked Florida grave she discovered in 1973 and whose work she subsequently edited and promoted. It is thanks to the efforts of Alice Walker that scores of Black women of the 19th and 20th centuries have been rescued from obscurity and given their deserved recognition in our time for their accomplishments - not just in literature, but in every field from science and the arts to gardening and quilting. Happy Birthday, Alice Walker!

Fred Rogers believed that understanding and embracing both our own identities and the experiences of others is key to building a more compassionate world. Let us encourage the next generation to take pride in their own culture and appreciate the beauty in diversity.

Happy Black History Month!
As DEI programs face challenges nationwide, our commitment to justice, representation, and equal opportunity is more important than ever. Black history isn’t just about the past—it’s about the ongoing fight for equity in all aspects of society.
We will always stand for DEI, not just in words but in action. Dismantling these initiatives doesn’t erase their necessity—it only reinforces the need to keep pushing for inclusive policies/spaces. This month and beyond, let’s educate, amplify, and take action to make inclusion a reality, not just a buzzword.

Join us this month and all year long celebrating the resilience and brilliance of the Black community and highlighting important moments in history.

We stand with children across communities that are leading with love and strive to further Dr. King’s legacy, and champion the work of the Connecticut Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities to support his belief that justice was holistic and racial, economic, and environmental justice were all connected.
