It was great to see some of our Exploring Artism friends at our annual Family Day! This year’s theme was Poets and Pirates. From a music performance by Sunny Train to still-life painting and a dress-up photo booth, there was no shortage of things to do in the gallery. We hope to see you next time!

What kinda of materials do you see? How about shapes? Drawing from Tony Cragg’s “Gray Container,” Linda lead our discussion about mixed-media sculpture. It was the perfect lead up to making our own versions downstairs.

This November Exploring Artism event was inspired by Henry Moore, a British sculptor of the twentieth century. Moore began his sculptures by making maquettes, small preliminary models that act as a “sketch” before the real sculpting gets underway.
In the modern wing of the museum, we rolled, pressed and formed our own maquettes using air-tight clay. We had the opportunity to share our creations with the group, too. We have artists in the making!

“This program is about trying to make the museum more inclusive, and open to people with all kinds of backgrounds and abilities,” said Friedlaender, who has worked in New Haven for 35 years. “We want to help provide public, social learning space for all different individuals and make them feel comfortable, safe, welcomed in a space that neurotypical people use all the time … and to show that programs can be designed to meet the needs of a vast spectrum of people. That’s basically it.”
