Binge alcohol intake has grown significantly in the US, especially in women. New research shows how binge drinking changes brain responses to stress and pleasurable rewards that are sex-specific. Such changes can enhance alcohol craving and promote greater binge drinking in men and women. Findings support the need for early intervention to reduce alcohol-related risk of depression, anxiety, chronic pain and other chronic diseases.

Stress hormones can alter brain networks — and strengthen emotional memories
📍 By Meg Dalton
New Yale research shows that the stress hormone cortisol doesn’t just kick in during tough moments — it actually changes the brain’s memory and emotion networks and makes emotional experiences more memorable. Researchers gave volunteers cortisol or a placebo, scanned their brains while they viewed images, and found that cortisol boosted connections in emotional and memory-related circuits, helping people remember emotionally intense moments better.
