Friday Feature: Meet Malati Rossington

"Hi, I'm Malati Rossington, a Political Science major at SCSU. Choosing Political Science was one of the best decisions I've made, and I've truly enjoyed being part of such a supportive and engaging department. My academic interests include international development, migration, humanitarian affairs, and public policy. My passion for public service was inspired by my mother and grandmother, whose dedication to helping others through public service has been a lifelong source of inspiration for me. After graduation, I plan to pursue a Master of Public Policy and continue working toward a career dedicated to helping people and creating meaningful impact, no matter where I am.

Alumni Feature: Meet Jonathan Santillo

"I earned two degrees at Southern Connecticut State University: first, my BA in History with a minor in Political Science in 2023, and then my MA in History in 2025 (alongside earning my Associate of Arts in Political Science from CT State Community College). In the History and Political Science Departments at SCSU, I developed the analytical skills and research foundation that prepared me to be an effective scholar and public servant. I have never felt out of place in advanced academic settings, which speaks directly to the quality of education at SCSU.

I am currently pursuing my Ed.D. in Higher Education Leadership at Northeastern University, where my doctoral research focuses on educational access, career pathways, and STEM teacher recruitment. In addition to my doctoral studies, I am fortunate to stay involved with SCSU through my work with the OwlsTeach Noyce Scholarship Program.

My commitment to service goes beyond my academic commitments and extends to my community at large. I am actively involved with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary as Flotilla Staff Officer – Recreational Boating Safety Visitation Program (FSO-PV). I am also committed to charitable work and service through the Knights of Columbus, where I serve as District Communications Director on the Connecticut District staff, Faithful Navigator for John Berry Assembly #97 (Fourth Degree), and Deputy Grand Knight for Mount Carmel Council #3605 (Hamden).

The mentorship and standards set forth by the faculty at Southern helped shape my approach to leadership and civic responsibility, rivaling what you would find at any top-tier institution.

To all the Owls out there: balancing rigorous degree programs, leadership roles, and community service isn't easy, but the discipline you build today will open doors you haven't even imagined yet. Go Owls!"

Friday Feature: Meet Carlos Agüero Echavarría

"My name is Carlos Agüero Echavarría and I’m in my last semester of my B.S in Political Science. On campus I’m a part of the Pre-Law Society serving as the treasurer, the College Democrats - SCSU chapter as Vice President, and Co-Managing Editor of the Society, Justice, and the Law: SCSU’s undergraduate pre-law journal. This past summer I had the honor of interning at the Innocence Project under the Strategic Litigation Department working for the Neighborhood Project centered around Asbury Park, NJ! I’m very passionate about the dynamics in federal and state political structures and institutions with small-scale communities. That said, the community with my peers and faculty here at Southern have pushed me to learn outside of my comfort zone and expand my horizons. From presenting my research paper at the NEPSA Spring ‘26 conference about analyzing the black church in the framework of Michel Foucault, particularly his version of the Panopticon mode, to simply being challenged inside the classroom. The community I’ve found here at Southern and in the Political Science Department has shaped my undergrad experience."
