At HCDC, our Mother’s and Family Day was full of little hands, happy hearts, and sweet surprises.

Families stopped by our book den to build colorful flower bouquets together for the people they love most. Our youngest learners joined the fun too by turning tiny painted handprints into beautiful flowers that families can keep for years to come.

We were also so thankful to gift each family a free book from United Way of Greater New Haven along with Hope anniversary swag as part of our 25th Anniversary celebration!

Thank you to all the wonderful mothers and mother figures in our HCDC family. We wish everyone a joyful and love-filled Mother’s Day!

On Family Friday, we wrapped up a wonderful Week of the Young Child with lots of love and positivity. We want to say thank you to all of our families for being part of the celebration. Your presence, support, and involvement mean so much to your children and to our school community.

reminds us that families are children’s first and most important teachers. When families and schools work together, children feel supported, confident, and ready to learn.

Thank you for partnering with us and for making this week so special!

On Artsy Thursday, it was all about creativity, imagination, and self-expression across our classrooms!

In our Newborn class, our babies explored sponge painting, taking in new colors and textures through a gentle, sensory experience.

Our Primary Toddlers participated in a hands-on sensory art activity using paint and a variety of tools. As they created, they strengthened fine motor skills and explored their own ideas. Teachers supported the experience with open-ended questions, encouraging language and social interaction throughout.

In Pre-K, students had the freedom to paint, draw, and create without strict rules, giving them space to fully express their imagination. As they shared their work, they also built language skills. One student proudly shared, “I made this for my mom because she loves pink.” Moments like these show how art connects creativity with communication and meaning.

In our Academy classroom, our students n explored different materials through painting, crafting, and Play-Doh. The room was full of color, creativity, and joyful mess as they made their own unique masterpieces.

National Association for the Education of Young Children highlights that open-ended art experiences help children think, problem solve, and create while building fine motor, social, and language skills.

Art + fun + a little bit of mess = the perfect day!

For Work Together Wednesday, we focused on teamwork, collaboration, and learning together.

Our Emergent Toddler students worked side by side as they observed caterpillars up close. They looked carefully at how they move, noticed their tiny features, and began to understand that living things grow and change over time just like we do! There was lots of curiosity as they pointed, shared what they saw, and learned from one another in the moment.

In the Pre-K and Academy classrooms, our students became little builders, engineers, and designers as they worked together to design and build a community. They shared ideas, took turns with materials, and supported each other throughout the process. Blocks were stacked, plans took shape, and each creation reflected their teamwork. It was wonderful to see their communication and cooperation.

NAEYC highlights that when children build and create together, they explore early math and science concepts while also developing social and language skills through collaboration and shared experiences.

On Tasty Tuesday, our students enjoyed a variety of fresh, yummy fruits.

We helped wash and prepare the fruit and got all of our eating utensils ready to go. We worked on taking turns, offering food to friends, and thinking about portions. Snack time also gave them the chance to strengthen fine motor skills and confidence as they practice feeding themselves.

NAEYC highlights how cooking experiences support learning across many areas. While preparing food, children use math skills like counting and portioning, build language by naming foods and talking with friends, and explore simple science concepts through observing textures, colors, and changes. These moments also help children become more comfortable with healthy foods and build positive habits around eating and movement.

Row, row, row your boat gently down the stream!

Our Primary Toddlers loved singing and dancing together with our DIY shakers. We made each out of paper towel tubes we painted to make them unique and tied fabric at the ends to help contain the beans on the inside.

We’re excited to kick off the Week of the Young Child! It’s a great time when we recognize the importance of early learning, young children, their families, and educators. Throughout the week, we’ll be sharing highlights from our daily activities as we celebrate learning through play, creativity, and connection.

On Music Monday, our classrooms were filled with rhythm, creativity, and joy!

Our Primary students got hands-on by making their own shakers and singing along to their favorite songs, while our Pre-K students designed colorful xylophones.

Music helps encouraging our movement and self-expression. Thank you to National Association for the Education of Young Children for reminding us how powerful music can be in early learning!

Our Emergent Toddlers classroom has been busy learning through play and discovery!

In one activity, children explored a special box we created and played a fun game of finding Jesus. This meaningful experience helped strengthen their memory skills while encouraging focus and observation in a hands-on, engaging way.

In another activity, our toddlers dove into early math concepts using colorful eggs. Through sorting, matching, and classifying by color, they explored similarities and differences while building foundational problem-solving skills. This sensory-rich experience supported both guided learning and independent exploration.

We love seeing our little learners grow through play, curiosity, and joyful discovery every day!
