On a cold and snowy Saturday, just before final exams, these intrepid math majors spent the whole day geeking out...
So proud of the 2025 William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition team from SCSU!

We in the Southern Math department are extremely proud of all of our graduates -- but those who have gone into the teaching profession hold a special place in our hearts. Teaching is "a tough row to hoe" but it comes with the knowledge that one's efforts can really make a difference in your students' lives. Southern's math graduates are always among the very best teachers in the state -- a state that is consistently amongst the best in education nationwide!
Any of our teaching alumni from the past 30 years will probably have fond memories of (and have been profoundly influenced by) Dr. Marty Hartog. Marty was an amazing teacher and mentor -- we're very sad to share the news that he has passed away.
Marty was perennially at the top of the "Everybody's Favorite Teacher" list. He was kind, and caring, and he always challenged his students to do more than they knew they could...
His obituary can be found at

There will be a memorial service for Marty on October 4th (see the obituary for details).
A group of Marty's family, friends and colleagues are participating in his honor at the "2025 Walk ALS New Haven" on October 5th at Lighthouse Point Park. https://secure.alsunitedct.org/site/TR/Endurance/General?pg=entry&fr_id=1171

Involvement Fair (a.k.a. Club Fair). The Math Club had a demo of "mathematical bubbling" which can be seen near the beginning of this video.
Because every great college story begins with saying yes to something new. #LeadingTheWay

The Math department will be hosting an end-of-year picnic on Friday, May 13th (12:30 to 5:30-ish)at the pavillion in College Woods Park in New Haven. We'd love to reconnect with our alumni, especially as there hasn't been much opportunity for that during the last few years! Many of you will have fond memories of Dr. Ross Gingrich - a pillar of the SCSU math community. Dr. G has announced that he is retiring this year, so the picnic would be a golden opportunity to stop by, say thanks, and wish him well in his retirement. Pass the word to your fellow Southern Math graduates who may not follow us on Facebook. There is a RSVP form at

Another moment from the NES/MAA meeting -- Southern student Eric Bauerfeld gave a presentation about the Graph Theory research he's been working on in his honors thesis.

Our chairperson, Dr. Aaron Clark, was one of 4 panelists invited to speak about graduate education in Data Science. (One of the highlights of the recent NES/MAA meeting!)
