The American Academy of Dermatology first launched Melanoma Monday on the first Monday in May 1995 as a national awareness effort to promote education and prevention of melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer. In 2026, it's estimated that nearly 112,000 melanomas will be diagnosed and more than 8,510 people will die of melanoma.
