Although the average MCAT score for ALL applicants was 511.7, it is important to note that each self-identified racial/ethnicity group has different acceptance statistics! More information can be found on the AAMC’s “2023 FACTS:
Applicants and Matriculants Data.”
As a reminder, although your GPA and MCAT are important component of your application, your story, your experiences, and your personality all play a role in your admission to medical school. Refrain from relying solely on your concrete data to create predictions on your chances of being accepted to medical school.

WHAT MEDICAL SCHOOLS SHOULD YOU APPLY TO? Here are some things to consider.
1. MISSION FIT- Your story matters. Your values, goals, and aspirations matter. Research each school's mission, vision, and values. Apply to schools that align with your aspirations as a future physician.
2. STATISTICS & SCORES- Although this isn't the only factor that is considered in your application, your chances of acceptance to a medical school increase if you fall in the GPA and MCAT range of accepted students. Using the MSAR, make sure you meet the minimum MCAT/GPA requirements, and apply to more schools in which your statistics fall between the 10th and 100th percentile of MCAT and GPA ranges of accepted students.* (Note- do NOT solely rely on the median score. A median score means 50% of people scored both below and above the score.)
3. GEOGRAPHIC AREA- Look at acceptance rates for In-State students vs. Out-of-State students to maximize your chances of being accepted to a school that will accept you based on your state of residence. In addition, consider where you would prefer to spend the next four years of your life. Would you like to be in an area close, or far from family or friends? What kind of weather would you like to live in?

Interview season is a great time to be communicative with medical schools. If done professionally, letters to admissions committees can make a huge difference in your application cycle outcome. Here are a few letters that you can write!
1) Update Letter: an update letter informs admissions committees of new accomplishments that you have achieved after submitting your application. It is recommended to send an update letter about 10 weeks after sending in your application without hearing back from a medical school. These accomplishments should be substantial (e.g. Getting an award or publishing a paper...NOT getting an A in a difficult class).
2) Letter of Continued Interest: this letter communicates to admissions committees that you are still interested in their program. It is also appropriate to re-iterate why their medical program will be a perfect fit for you, and why you are a perfect fit for their program. This letter should be sent after an update letter has been sent. It's great if you can include an update as well!
3) Letter of Intent: this letter communicates that if you are accepted to their program, you will attend their school. A letter of intent is normally sent at the end of the medical school application cycle. You should only send this letter to one school. You should make it clear what type of letter you are sending by directly stating that you will attend if accepted.

This time three years ago I was walking into my interview at Harvard Medical School. I can still remember how nervous I was—thinking that years of work hinged on this one moment. In the weeks before, I had spent hours and hours preparing for the interview, but it didn’t stop my voice from quivering a little as I said hi to my interviewer.
Quickly I reminded myself that my interviewer was just another person, calming my nerves a bit. I straight up told my interviewer I was nervous. Then I stuck to the basics and had a conversation. Things progressed smoothly and I was able to walk out after with confidence. Sometimes being genuine is worth more than being perfect.
In our mock interviews, one of the things we emphasize is sincerity. An applicant will rarely impress an interviewer with intelligence. But the interviewer WILL remember the person who was able to connect with them trough a short conversation, much like the brief interactions physicians have with their patients.
