The Relaxation Thermometer can show children how their feelings change based on the level of emotion they are experiencing, and help them better regulate those feelings.

Reading books that feature diverse characters enriches children’s understanding of the world. In honor of , All Our Kin is sharing children’s book recommendations from our staff, written by Black authors. 📚

Today’s recommendation comes from our New Haven Site Director, Shaniece TJ Conyers: Shades of Black: A Celebration of Our Children by Sandra L. Pinkney.

Shaniece says, “When I was an infant and toddler teacher, I often read this book to foster positive self-esteem in our young learners. It beautifully illustrates that Black children come in various shades, each unique and special.”

My favorite line from the book is, “I am Black. I am Unique. I am the creamy white frost in vanilla ice cream and the milky smooth brown in a chocolate bar.” 🍦🍫
