We need to remember this as our kids learn. Aiming for perfection can create stress for your child. As they learn, it is more important to teach them that mistakes are a part of learning and help them grow. We want them to enjoy the process, not aim for the unattainable.

Why is reading for meaning so important?
Why am I posting about bananas? No. I am not going bananas. Yes. My husband asked if we were getting a monkey....
I was reading quickly as I put together a grocery delivery order. I failed to read for meaning...these bananas were sold by the bunch...not individually. We ended up eating a lot of banana things that week. 😉
Lesson learned: read for meaning. Fluency is important, but checking for understanding is equally important for kids and adults!

If you know me, you know I am a huge fan of getting kids moving! Writing the room is one of my favorite ways to do this. Print and hide all of your house and get kids excited to learn. They can read the words or write them. The cards can also be used for memory or flash cards, or with a good old-fashioned board game like Chutes and Ladders!

Board games! I know I’ve posted aboit this before but I think it’s such a wonderful way to practice what kids are learning. We used it to practice spelling long a words. You can use it for anything! Grab some index cards and put spelling words, vocabulary, math facts, review questions for a test….the list goes on and on! No need to make up a new game, just use one you have and partners answer questions before they roll or spin etc. Family engagement and skills practice for the win!!
PS This kiddo loved playing and happened to have Vegas join him. 😊
