Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership

Earlier this month, we presented the 2025 Colin L. Powell Distinguished Leadership Award to United States Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

This award recognizes individuals who have reached the highest level in their fields, and who embody the leadership values that Gen. Powell demonstrated throughout his career: integrity, humility, humor, pragmatism, and common sense.

A Bronx native, Justice Sotomayor rose to become the first Latina appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court. Her journey — marked by perseverance, determination, and an unwavering commitment to justice — paved the way for countless others to follow. Throughout her career, she has been a tireless advocate for fairness and equality, particularly for those who have been marginalized and overlooked. Her leadership is defined by her intellectual brilliance, her deep empathy, her pragmatic approach to the law, and her ability to inspire others to serve with humility and compassion.

The Distinguished Leadership Awards event was conceived by Marco Antonio Achón, Co-Chair of the Colin Powell School Board of Visitors and global head of Corporate Banking, Santander Corporate & Investment Banking, and made possible through the generous support of Santander.

The award was presented by Linda Powell, Co-Chair of the Board of Visitors of the Colin Powell School. CUNY Chancellor Félix Matos Rodríguez, CCNY President Vince Boudreau, and Colin Powell School Dean Andrew Rich, all paid tribute to Justice Sotomayor.

If you’ve seen our video about the free $90 metrocard, then you’ve probably heard about the WELCOME Program. Great news!! If you’re a first year student or an incoming freshman this Spring 2025, you might be able to enroll!

The WELCOME Program creates learning communities for first-year students designed to support them during their transition into college. Students from ALL MAJORS ARE ELIGIBLE to participate!

The program enrolls students in three foundational courses with a cohort of 25 peers, giving them a unique opportunity to make friends and build connections early in their college journey. Selected students will also benefit from proactive advising, and peer mentorship. Read the details below to see if you’re eligible to enroll for the spring 2025 semester!

The Colin Powell School community extends our condolences to our Board Chair Linda Powell and her siblings Michael and Annemarie on the passing of their mother Alma Powell.

In a moving statement released today, Linda Powell and her siblings called their mother “the grounding force of our family.” They went on to say, “During childhoods marked by constant moving to new homes, we always felt secure, because home was wherever she stood. She was an exemplary role model for us and for the world. She served our country, alongside our father, with intelligence and grace. We will miss her terribly but take comfort in the fact that she had a life so well-lived and is reunited with our father.”
