What is zikr, or remembering Allah? These words are an expression of your inner feelings. When you are extremely happy for a reason, you smile and laugh out loud. When you are very sad about something, you can't control tears falling from your eyes. In the same way, if you truly have faith in Allah Almighty, your heart will be full of God's glory and majesty. Your soul will be deeply in awe of God's works you see around you. You will see God's hand in your life. You will eagerly begin to remember God, thank God and praise God. These spontaneous words of remembrance is zikr. Zikr is not memorizing some words and repeating them on different occasions without knowing what you are saying.

The Quran says about Eid al-Adha sacrifice: Their flesh and blood do not reach God Almighty: it is your piety that reaches Him. (22: 37) It appears the animals are being presented before God, but in reality you yourself are presenting yourself before God. Through the sacrifice, you express your determination to erase your ego for the sake of God. You will discipline yourself even if it is difficult. You will sacrifice your personal interest to uphold high values. Your behaviour will not be decided by your desires and emotions, but the greater good of society. Eid al-Adha is a rehearsal of high values of faith, and it is required that these values be translated into practical life all the year round.
