Congratulations to Easton Geister with the Craig County 4-H Shooting Stars on a successful day at the State 4-H Shoot in Appomattox this past Saturday!! This was his first state competition and he earned a bronze award. Our shooting sports program offers archery now, but we hope to add other disciplines soon. Craig County 4-H is starting our WHEP team practices tomorrow from 4:00 to 5:00 PM at the Extension office (U. S. Forest Service Work Station on Craigs Creek Rd.). WHEP is a competitive program involving wildlife identification and management. Kids, ages 9 to 19, compete in teams at a state competition each year. Winning senior teams are invited to participate in a national competition in a host state. If youth are interested, they can join us tomorrow or call/email for more information on future practices. We had a fun and successful horse camp last week! Kids learned safety around horses, groomed and rode horses, painted horse shoes, and even painted a horse (washable paint of course).

As school approaches and the summer break draws to an end, I wanted to share some happy pictures from a great 4-H camp! Already looking forward to 2027!! We should have the date after our post-camp meeting on September 15th if not sooner.

We had an amazing week at Junior 4-H Camp this week. It was a sizzler, but campers enjoyed lots of fun classes, swimming, an evening carnival and talent show, dances, and campfires! Happy 4th to everyone!!

Over the last two weekends, Craig County 4-H had teams at the SW District Spring Air shooting competition at the W. E. Skelton 4-H Center and at the Wildlife Habitat Education Program (WHEP) competition in Charlottesville. The 4-H Shooting Stars competed in archery on March 14th. The 4-H WHEP team competed in a wildlife challenge general knowledge contest at James Monroe's Highland. This was the first competition for both teams, and each did really well. We are so proud of both groups!!

Hope everyone is having a nice Sunday! I wanted to go ahead and share the link for 2026 Junior 4-H Camp pre-registration; running from February 2nd to March 2nd. For our Craig/Giles/Roanoke & Salem cluster, we have already allotted beds. Craig girls will be in one wing of RJJ (Reid J. Jones) and boys will be in Svoboda. Following the March 2nd deadline, we give up beds to the other counties if they have waiting lists (or vice-versa). So register quickly to make sure your child or children will have a space. Just a note – teens interested in going to camp as a Counselor-in-Training (CIT) or Teen Counselor do not complete this pre-registration form. They need to contact me for information on how they apply for these leadership roles. That information is also in the camp google site at: https://sites.google.com/vt.edu/23cgmrjuniorcamp/home
