Suicide Prevention PLUS Training for Crisis Counselors. Create change in mental health in America

Su***de Prevention PLUS has a primary purpose to train communications skills that save lives
and promote resilience. We consider preservation of an individual’s autonomy the most
important aspect of our work, second only to immediate safety. We train safety in a “drill” like
fashion to eliminate confusion and mistrust so that real work can begin in the first interaction. Mission Statement:
Our Mis

sion is to provide quality training that creates discussion and nuance to the field
of su***de prevention and crisis work that is capable of creating change in the landscape
of mental health in America.

It can be hard to let go on some calls. A person is so distressed and starts off so bent on ending things and even though they are receptive to your help, you just don’t know.

Trust your caller with your caller. We might be the only people they can trust, but more important is that we let them know that we trust them too.

Many people who struggle with mental health become surrounded by those who are constantly concerned about them and just want to insulate and protect them to point of suffocation. Be their breath of fresh air.

How often do you talk to someone who feels like they have made a major concession just to ask you for help? How often do you talk to callers who fear talking about su***de for fear of hospitalization. We need to know how to respond to these concerns.

“I’m here to talk about su***de.” Is all you might need to say to start the conversation and let them feel safe with you.

The truth is we might have to call for more support, we might have to urge them to get more help. Until safety is established, we can’t dance around the way things may play out.

Everyone should feel safe talking about suicidal thoughts or urges because if you can’t talk about it, you might be left to think about it until you act on it.

Drug addiction is not a primary problem, but a response to trauma. If your visitor mentions substance abuse while talking about su***de do not assume that they have made a su***de/addiction connection.

Sometimes drugs are the only way someone can hold on for another day.

Pay attention to suicidal thoughts and crisis, regardless of substance use and plant seeds to support a path to recovery by leading them to believing they are worth it.

Many people hear voices or see things that are not there and hallucinations by themselves are not necessarily indicative of mental illness, especially in cultures outside of the United States.

When someone is distressed by hallucinations it’s important to reinforce that these experiences are coming from inside of themselves. Stress is usually a primary cause of increased extrasensory activity. Stress reduction techniques are helpful, but goal directed behaviors are more important. “Ain’t nobody got time for hallucinations!”

While we talk a lot about hearing and seeing things, many people also experience sensations of being touched, smells that aren’t there, and tastes that are not there.

For many people, leaning into normalization of hallucinations has been shown to help improve quality of life.
