It’s been a hot minute since I shared what we’ve been doing in our Art at the Library classes. 🎨 The past two classes we’ve been learning about some very helpful, fascinating creatures— opossums and honeybees. While you likely already know that honeybees are helpful as pollinators, did you know a single opossum can eat 5,000 ticks a year?!

This week in Art at the Library, we began our study of reptiles with this Sleepy Surprise Snake project using sharpie, gel crayons, and water. 🐍 We enjoyed learning about the life cycle of snakes while experimenting with a new medium. The library had so many fascinating books on snakes, and students were excited to check them out for more learning at home!

Our past two Art at the Library classes, we have continued our study of rodents with the colorful Indian Giant Squirrel— the world’s largest squirrel— and the gentle capybara— the world’s largest rodent.

Our projects were entitled Rainbow Squirrel, in honor of the Indian Giant squirrel’s colorful coat, and Friendly Capybaras, referencing the capybaras gentle and long suffering nature with other animals such as turtles and birds who are commonly known to hitch rides on the capybaras back.

During this week’s Art at the Library classes, we began our art study of rodents with this Mouse House project. 🐭 We learned about the different kinds of homes rodents make, including burrows. Students imagined what sort of rooms and items they would want in their burrow to keep them occupied all winter long. It was a fun and creative project with a lot of room for unique interpretations and imagination!

Today at Art at the Library, we wrapped up our coastal/ocean animal-themed art study with this watercolor resist Grumpy Lion Fish project. 🎨📚 We found some library books that gave us information on coral reefs and enjoyed using the photography in them to inspire our underwater artwork. 🐠 Can you find the one lion fish that is NOT grumpy?

Today at Art at the Library, we continued our animal-themed art study with coastal birds. These Sneaky Seagulls are certainly up to no good, stealing snacks from unsuspecting beach goers. 🍪🍩🍕🍉

Today in Create! Principles of Design, we continued our study of BALANCE and painted these Van Gogh-inspired forest scenes. 🍃🍁🍂 I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for cooler weather to bring us those beautiful fall foliage colors!

Today in our Animals at the Library art class, we created these fun Crabcakes. 🦀 I loved seeing everyone’s crabs/crabcakes takes shape and the creative touches each student added to their artwork. We learned a little about crabs and coral reefs as we added sea floor details and underwater decorations to our cakes.

Today some of our Homeschool PEP Art class from last year enjoyed creating art in the park. The dog days of summer are finally behind us, and we celebrated with this Hound Dog Ride project as we took advantage of today’s absolutely beautiful weather. 🐶⛅️🌳

What are the dog days of summer? “The term ‘Dog Days’ traditionally refers to a period of particularly hot and humid weather occurring during the summer months of July and August— specifically July 2-Aug 11.”

Yesterday was our first PCHS art class of the year, and we kicked off our Animals at the Library theme with this Tiny Turtle project using wax resist.

We also learned a little about sea turtles. For example, we discovered that there are 8 different kinds of sea turtles, leatherbacks earning the designation of largest as they grow to about 7 feet and 1000 pounds. A mama sea turtle returns to the same beach she was born to lay her clutch of up to 100 eggs. If you ever see sand and tiny baby turtles bubbling up from their nesting hole, you’re witnessing what is called a “turtle boil.” Unfortunately, most of those tiny turtles will not survive to adulthood. 📚 It’s amazing the things you can learn and do at the library!

It’s almost that time of year again! 39 students are signed up for art classes this fall. If you’re interested in art for your k-8th grader, be sure to reach out. I have room in my schedule for one more class if there is enough interest.

Monday was our last lesson in Create! The Elements of Art. 🎨 🍎 Our final project was this Form Apple, and the students were 😱😳SHOCKED 😳😱 when I picked up my brush and began painting the white board. Spoiler alert: tempera washes right off nonporous surfaces with very little effort. They were relieved when a baby wipe took it all right back off at the end of class. 😮‍💨 Check out all the beautiful art projects from our class that the students displayed on Family Night. What a fun semester of art!
