For Week 6, Global Girls invited Geidy Mendez, a community organizer and fellow Rutgers student, to conduct an art class following Geidy’s approach to teaching creativity as a channel for emotion. Using a mental imagery exercise, Geidy asked Global Girls participants to think of their happy space, a space that helps them escape when academics, family, and the future are overwhelming. Geidy shared her experience as a woman with an intersectional approach addressing how her background affects her artwork. Take a look at some of the incredible perspectives our participants shared with us. @ Plainfield, New Jersey

Who knew learning how to write policy could be so fun? After learning the basic fundamentals of policy writing, our students were given the challenge to write their own policy proposals on issues that affect them on a daily basis. Some examples include whether or not students should be able to pick their own classes and whether body positivity courses should be incorporated in standard education lessons. Not only were there policy proposals phenomenal but each student was able to overcome their “fear” of public speaking as they presented their policy to the entire class. Look out for upcoming clips of their policy presentations! @ Maxson

Week 4 was all about the history of social movements. We discussed the Women’s Suffrage, Civil Rights, Black Live Matter, and March for Our Lives movements. Global Girls encourages opinions, dissent, and activism. For our weekly activity, we put together a timeline of key events in each movement. As emerging leaders, students in Global Girls are pushed to utilize their voices in ways that allow them to share their knowledge and communicate their unique perspectives with others. 📷:

Here, in our third session, students discussed the importance of mental health awareness and how mental health affects them and those around them in their daily lives. Adolescence is a significant time for developing and maintaining the social and emotional habits necessary for mental well-being. Mental health problems affect about 1 in every 10 children in the United States and so it is crucial to create spaces in which children can engage in positive dialogue surrounding mental health. ✨

Take a look at last week’s session on celebrating our diverse identities. We learned about intersectionality in our lives and how that affects our experiences. An activity on representing ourselves through art gave us the opportunity to get to know each other a little better! Tomorrow, we’ll be tackling what empowerment means to us!! @ Maxson
