The Rutgers Center for Minority Serving Institutions (CMSI), housed in the Proctor Institute at the Rutgers Graduate School of Education, serves as a repository for research, data, best practices, emerging innovations, and ideas on and within MSIs. Located at the Rutgers Graduate School of Education and housed within the Samuel DeWitt Proctor Institute for Leadership, Equity, and Justice, the Rutg

ers Center for Minority Serving Institutions’ mission is to:

*Elevate the educational contributions of MSIs, ensuring their participation in national conversations;


*Increase rigorous scholarship on MSIs;


*Connect MSI academic and administrative leadership to leading reform initiatives in the United States;


*Inform administrative, instructional and philanthropic practices at MSIs;


*Advance effective policies that have a positive impact on strengthening MSIs, the development and support of their students and faculty, and the quality of the elementary and secondary schools within their communities;


*Bring together MSIs around their common interests, strengths, and challenges to increase efficiency and optimize resources;


*Enhance the efforts of MSIs to close educational achievement gaps and assessment performance of disadvantaged communities.

“HSIs are engines of social mobility. When you look at the outcomes, time and time again, you see that student life outcomes improve when students attend HSIs. Right now, the focus has been on retention, on persistence, and graduation. However, we are moving towards universities looking at career-readiness indexes, and these are being measured in ways they've never been before. Most of the time, universities track outcomes, but they don't diagnose in real time and within the institution when students are at their highest risk of dropping out. And the story now is that when students can articulate their career goals, persistence and retention increase.”

Hear as they examine the organizational strategies and practices that HSIs employ (or can employ) to support job-market readiness, particularly for first-generation Latinx students who largely attend these institutions.
