Good luck to the newly-minted Dr. Fernando Pareja who started his new post-doc position today at the Steven's Insititute of Technology! He'll be applying civil and ocean engineering to study geomorphic change and storm risk in New York harbor. 🌊⚡🌀
Before he left for this new adventure, he was kind enough to answer some of our silly questions (never knew that he was a watch enthusiast!):
If you had to study something completely different, or pick any career outside of science, what would it be? 📕🎥🎺
A/ I would pick History (Art History, Military History), Maritime Studies, Nautical Archaeology, or some field of study related to archives or restoration. I really enjoy everything old school and vintage from movies to art and books.
What did you learn most recently?⌚🇬🇧🍸
A/ In the movie Goldfinger (1964), James Bond appears to be wearing a Rolex Submariner watch with a certain kind of strap called the “Nato”. Some people then refer to it as the “Bond Nato” --but they’re wrong because the movie was released seven years before the British introduced the Nato strap (and yeah, I know a lot about watches!)
What interests you most about your research/oceanography? 🌊🌊🌊
A/ I’m more of a problem solver than an explorer. I like studying people’s daily interaction with the ocean and how it has evolved over time. Then I combine that knowledge with hydrodynamics to figure out novel ways to protect people and property from storms and floods.
