🌎 Exploring the immigrant experience in academia at Rutgers

What does it mean to be an academic immigrant? Rutgers faculty explored this question during an event on October 6 featuring Dafna Lemish, Distinguished Professor of Journalism and Media Studies at the Rutgers School of Communication and Information (SCI), who shared highlights from her new book, "Always an Academic Immigrant," published by Rutgers University Press. 📚

The event continued with a panel discussion featuring Rutgers faculty members Laurent Vera, Selin Bengi Gümrükçü, Jianing Li, and Rahul Mittal, who shared their personal journeys and perspectives on navigating academic life as immigrants. The conversation invited audience participation, creating an opportunity for reflection, dialogue, and a deeper understanding of the experiences that shape Rutgers’ international academic community.

Students and faculty who took part in Access Africa programs gathered at Alexander Library to share what they learned.

Students told us about the land and how much fun they had. They also taught us how to be a respectful guest in another country and culture, as visitors and as Americans.

Access Africa is a study abroad initiative from the Center for African Studies and Rutgers Global that lowers the cost of studying in Africa.

🌏🇮🇳 Strengthening Rutgers’ connections with India!

On Friday, Sept. 25, Rutgers Global welcomed Vivek Mansukhani, Head of IIE India, and Riddhiman Sarkar, Lead for Programs & Partnerships for the Rutgers India Initiative, for a conversation with Rutgers faculty and staff about engagement in India.

The event featured an overview of the Rutgers India Initiative, which is now in its third year, followed by an engaging discussion and brainstorming session focused on opportunities to deepen partnerships, build connections, and continue to advance Rutgers’ presence in India. The conversation continued over lunch, bringing colleagues from across the university together to share ideas and explore possibilities for the future.

Together, we’re building new pathways for research, education, partnerships, and global impact between Rutgers and India. 🇮🇳🤝🇺🇸

“The hands-on experience I gained is something that I will never forget and will carry with me throughout the rest of my career. But it was the amazing people I had the privilege of meeting along the way, from my classmates, to my teachers, and the Belizean locals, that really made my trip so unforgettable. I can’t express enough just how grateful I am to have had the opportunity to study abroad in Belize, and I wouldn’t hesitate to do it a million times again.” (3/3)

“Not only did I learn a lot about livestock, companion animals, and Belize's native animals, but I also practiced many skills! From administering vaccinations to a plethora of animals, to suturing cats and dogs, and even performing my own castrations on pigs, sheep, and goats, I learned so much that I will carry with me throughout the rest of my career. Studying abroad offered many challenges, like staying motivated when I couldn’t get the hang of something, but perseverance got me through. That and the amazing people I had the privilege of meeting along the way. From my classmates, to my teachers, to the Belizean locals, I’d never felt more at home while being the farthest from home I’ve ever been. I can’t express enough just how grateful I am to have had the opportunity to study abroad in Belize, and I wouldn’t hesitate to do it a million times again.”

“Deciding to study abroad was by far the best decision I’ve made so far in my 3 years here at Rutgers. As someone who doesn’t like to step out of their comfort zone very much, deciding to travel to a foreign country with a bunch of people I don't know and, more importantly, without my mom, was a big deal for me. Although I knew it wouldn’t be easy, I also knew that traveling to Belize to study large-animal veterinary practices was so important because it would elevate my career, give me irreplaceable experience, and hopefully get me into vet school (fingers crossed). But I did not know just how significantly this experience would impact my life.” (1/3)
