RU COOL Rutgers University Center for Ocean Observing Leadership. Researching bio-physical processes of coastal waters off New Jersey and around the World.

The Coastal Ocean Observation Lab (COOL) at Rutgers University is part of the Institute of Marine and Coastal Sciences. The lab was established in October 1992 by Dr. Scott M. Glenn as the Marine Remote Sensing lab, and has since grown to include several faculty, over a dozen research staff members and countless graduate and undergraduate students.

Last month, we welcomed the 2026 student cohort of GEAR UP at Rutgers for a tour of the COOL room and a talk about oceanography. Of course, no tour would be complete without a glimpse at our underwater gliders! 🌊

🚨Science at Sea Update 🚨
The SPICE cruise (Salt Finger Processes Influence on Carbon and Ecosystem Dynamics) is officially underway aboard the R/V Falkor (too)! The team kicked off the month of August in port unpacking boxes, assembling science equipment and adjusting to their new home at sea. The last few days included the start of scientific sampling.

This week, RUCOOL grad student Jake Kuenzli is tagging bull sharks as part of a collaboration with the Atlantic Shark Institute and South Carolina Department of Natural Resources to investigate habitat use of bull sharks in the U.S. Northeast Shelf Large Marine Ecosystem.

It was a busy day for Lori, Chip and our grad students last Friday as they deployed 2 gliders for the NJ Research Monitoring Initiative and 1 for . The gliders will spend the next month cruising the waters off NJ monitoring water quality, taking scientific measurements of temp, salinity, pH, oxygen, phytoplankton, listening for whales and fish tags, and looking for zooplankton.
