New Jersey Future’s recap of a 2026 conference session reinforces a clear message: local streets work best when they’re designed for people first. VTC Executive Director Leigh Ann Von Hagen noted that streets function as social spaces, economic engines, and connectors to daily needs, shaping whether people feel welcome and safe without relying on a car. She highlighted an effective safety strategy: “Reducing motor vehicle speeds is generally the key to making non-drivers feel safer.” With growing momentum across New Jersey to rethink street design as part of the goal to eliminate road fatalities by 2040, the takeaway is simple: everyone benefits when streets are designed for all ages and abilities.

What happens when transportation planning meets virtual reality? 🚗🥽

VTC and New Jersey Department of Transportation staff recently visited Rowan University’s Machine & Artificial Intelligence Virtual Reality Center for a hands-on look at cutting-edge Machine Learning, AI, Augmented Reality, and Virtual Reality technologies. Exploring these immersive tools sparked conversations about innovation, transportation safety, and planning for the future.

🚲 Can a good bike path be made even better?

That question guided a Fall 2025 Bloustein School studio led by VTC staff Sean Meehan and Greg Woltman. Working with the City of Linwood, students developed a plan to make the community’s bike path even better—improving safety 🦺, managing congestion near schools 🚸, and enhancing the experience for everyone who uses the path. 🌳🚴
