For this week’s intern spotlight, we are celebrating Dr. Kelsey Briscese!

Hometown: Clark, NJ

Med school: RWJMS

Hobbies: Running, reading, skiing, and karaoke

Why EM? I was drawn to emergency medicine because my background in pharmacy gave me a deep appreciation for teamwork and collaboration in direct patient care. I love that EM allows me to continue building on my pharmacotherapeutic knowledge while working in a fast-paced environment where no two days are the same. Most importantly, I enjoy connecting with patients and being part of their care during meaningful moments.

What I am looking forward to most: I am most looking forward to growing alongside my co-residents, learning from incredible mentors, and continuing to develop my clinical decision-making and procedural skills as I grow into a confident emergency physician.

Why EM: I love the teamwork, variety, and procedures that come with EM. Every day is different, and I enjoy caring for patients with diverse conditions while working together to make quick, meaningful decisions.

What you’re looking forward the most: I’m looking forward to the friendships and mentorships I’ll build during residency, while gaining the knowledge, skills, and confidence to become the best EM physician I can be!

Why EM? I fell in love with the fast pace and the challenge of having to manage patients with a wide variety of pathologies. I love being able to do hands on procedures while also thinking critically in high pressure situations.

What you’re looking forward to the most: I’m excited to continue to bond with my co-residents and grow as a physician. The community and mentorship at RWJ has been amazing and I’m excited to learn from all my wise seniors!

Why EM: I feel EM is special in that we get to build rapport quickly with people of all ages and experience a vast spectrum of medicine through the patient community every day in the ER

In honor of our new interns starting today, I would like to make a final senior sendoff to Dr. Abouelela!

Where are you headed to next?

I’ll be headed to my followship pursuing double board certification in Emergency Medicine and Medical Toxicology in Philadelphia at Jefferson Einstein Hospital

What are you most looking forward to after graduation?

I’m most looking forward the learning opportunities ahead of me and the opportunity to teach others as I subspcialize in poisoning, overdose, envenomations, radiation exposure, and more! I’m also very excited to explore more of the the city of brotherly love!

What will you miss the most about residency?

Without a doubt the people I met and the lasting relationships I built while working in at Rutgers in New Brunswick. I spent 9 years total at Rutgers for my undergraduate training in food science engineering and nutrition, getting my masters in biomedical science and finally residency. It’s been a wonderful place to train and work with the incredible people who make it that way.

Any final words of advice for incoming interns and current residents?

Always stay curious and compassionate. If you approach every situation with an honest intention to understand the perspective of who is in front of you and give them the opportunity to tell their story you will be amazed at how much you can learn.

Where are you headed to next?
Jefferson

What are you most looking forward to after graduation?
Nothing specific, looking forward to learning something different, and continuing to use and work on everything I learned in residency.

What will you miss the most about residency?
Our residency class, our attendings, Dr. Wei and Dr. Chin, Friday pulse emails, DMos standup comedy routine (which unfortunately kept getting interrupted by the resus bell and patients), and of course, my co residents.

Any final words of advice for incoming interns and current residents?
My advice to interns would be- while in residency, make sure to spend time with those who love you. Take time every day to be grateful and proud of how far you’ve gotten! You will learn a lot during residency, and it won’t be easy, but it will be a memorable experience that will be truly worth it!

Where are you headed to next?
Attending Physician at Jersey Shore University Medical Center 🏖️

What are you most looking forward to after graduation?
I’m really looking forward to returning to Jersey Shore University Medical Center; it’s a place that means a lot to me personally and professionally. It was my first job as a medical scribe in college, and it’s also where I was born, so it feels like a full-circle moment. Some of the physicians I scribed for will now be my co-attendings! Also, my Dad has worked at JSUMC for 30+ years and we will now be working together as physicians. Outside of work, I am looking forward to spending more time with my family/friends and building a future with my soon to be wife! I would not be where I am today without the love and support from them.

What will you miss the most about residency?
I’ll miss the people the most; my co-residents, attendings, and the nurses, etc. The relationships and teamwork we built made even the toughest days manageable, and that sense of camaraderie is something I’ll really value moving forward. I would not have secured my dream job without everyone who helped mold me into the physician I am today. I will also miss the laughs shared during residency conference/on-shift.

Any final words of advice for incoming interns and current residents? Residency is hard. Be patient with yourself and ‘trust the process’; there’s a steep learning curve, but you’ll grow more than you expect. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, and take every opportunity to learn from the people and patients around you. Most importantly, support each other and take care of yourselves; those relationships will carry you through the hardest moments. Although it may not feel like it early on, residency does get better as you progress through the years!

What are you most looking forward to after graduation?
Starting fellowship and continuing to learn more about a new subspecialty within Emergency Medicine

What will you miss the most about residency?
The culture and my co-residents. We have a very special culture of supporting one another here and it has truly made my residency special.

Any final words of advice for incoming interns and current residents?
Keep learning! Medicine is a field where you must always strive to learn more, especially with such a myriad of new evidence appearing each and every day. Never stop itching for more and continue to grow into a lifelong learner.

Where are you headed to next?
Critical Care-Anesthesiology Fellowship at The University of Florida (UF) Shands Hospital 🐊

What are you most looking forward to after graduation?
To enhance my skillset on difficult and advanced airway techniques, bolster my critical care knowledge base through a variety of ICU exposure, and incorporating a new style of medicine into daily practice as an ED attending. I am also looking forward to year round golf as winter isn’t a thing in Florida ☀️

What will you miss the most about residency?
I will miss the friendships I formed over the past three years with everyone in the department from attendings to co-residents, APPs, nurses, pharmacists, CCTs, RTs. Having them watch me grow over three years in the resuscitation bay was probably a wild experience ! I will also miss the Celsius fridge in the cafeteria.

Any final words of advice for incoming interns and current residents?
Coming into the field of emergency medicine with little to no experience as a medical student had me very nervous going into my first year. Don’t compare yourself to anyone else. Run your own race , and certainly do not sprint in the beginning. Figure out what your own strengths and weaknesses are so you could build your own craft to deliver the best care possible to your patients. Read every single day to stay up to date on current guidelines, and continue to build your knowledge base so clinically it becomes easier to justify your actions. And once you establish yourself as you become more senior in residency, make sure you pay it forward to the next generation of doctors following in your footsteps by helping them out. Lastly, make sure you also take care of yourself mentally, physically, and emotionally throughout the process. Your patients don’t deserve anything than you, at your very best.
