Our Publication Feature in the this month is “Asian America Rising: New Directions for Political Activism” by Diane Wong, Assistant Professor of Political Science at Rutgers University-Newark.

In the late 1960s, Asian American political activism emerged to unite disparate Asian diasporic communities living in the United States behind a radical political identity shaped by the Black Power and anti-imperialist movements of their times. Today, Asian Americans are more diverse, and, at times, more politically divided than ever before. In media and electoral politics, Asian Americans are celebrated as the fastest-growing racial demographic in the United States and claimed as evidence of racial progress. Yet the “rise” of Asian America rarely centers the coordinated forms of grassroots political organizing that Asian Americans have used to shape their place in society.

In Asian America Rising, Diane Wong and Mark Tseng-Putterman bring together an interdisciplinary group of established and emerging scholars of Asian American activism and politics, community organizers, artists, archivists, and others to highlight the diversity of twenty-first century Asian American political movements across a number of critical areas.

Ultimately, Wong and Tseng-Putterman show important shifts and emergent directions for Asian American politics in the twenty-first century.

Our Archive Feature in the this month is The Black Bibliography Project at Rutgers University

Bibliographic Study has long been an invigorating field of scholarship, but in the past five years it has become a thriving site of breakthrough initiatives and collaborations among scholars, librarians, curators, artists, and digital humanists.

Led by Co-Directors Meredith McGill (Professor of English at Rutgers University and the 2019-20 Beinecke Distinguished Fellow in the Humanities at Yale University) and Jacqueline Goldsby(Professor of English, African American Studies, and American Studies at Yale University), The Black Bibliography Project (BBP) aims to revive and transform Descriptive Bibliography—the systematic description of print materials as physical objects—for African American and Black Diaspora literary studies. The goal is to create a digital database whose capacities can reveal the dynamic social formations and aesthetic practices that are specific to Black print culture in the U.S. and beyond.

McGill and Goldsby believe that the digital environment is ideally suited for bibliographic information: unlike codex bibliographies, a digital bibliographic database can be queryable, expandable, revisable, and re-organizable (no longer ordered only by the lives of authors); it can include images of covers, illustrations, and vital bibliographic details; it can also be crowd-sourced and publicly accessible.

Tajah Ebram, Black Studies Subject Specialist Librarian, is a scholar, teacher and the Black Studies Librarian at Rutgers University New Brunswick and is the Rutgers University lead for the Black Bibliography Project, which seeks to revitalize the practice of bibliography for African American literary and cultural studies.

Our faculty researcher in the this month is Brittney Cooper, Professor of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and Africana Studies at Rutgers University-New Brunswick.

Dr. Cooper is also the Principal Investigator and Founding Director of the Race and Gender Equity (RAGE) Lab at Rutgers University.

An award-winning teacher, Professor Cooper teaches courses on race, gender, and sexuality, Hip Hop, Black Intellectual History, and Black Feminist Thought.

Her books include Beyond Respectability: The Intellectual Thought of Race Women, winner of the 2018 Merle Curti Prize for Best Book in U.S. Intellectual History from the Organization of American Historians; the New York Times bestseller Eloquent Rage: A Black Feminist Discovers Her Superpower; Feminist AF: A Guide to Crushing Girlhood; Stand Up!: 10 Mighty Women Who Made a Change; and The Crunk Feminist Collection.

“Agua sí, Oro no”/“Water, yes, Gold, no” was the cry of the people of San Juan de la Maguana, Dominican Republic, on May 3, 2026. Thousands of residents, farmers, and community leaders, most of whom were Afrodescendant or racially mixed, took to the streets to fight a power much wealthier than them, the Canadian Company GoldQuest Mining Corporation. GoldQuest’s plan is to extract gold, silver, and copper from the Central Mountain Range in the Dominican Republic, which provides the main water source for 143,000 people.

Announcing the next feature in our digital humanities op-ed/thought piece/writing initiative at the ISGRJ, "Just Takes."

The Just Takes initiative aligns with our mission to increase the public relevance and impact of Rutgers University scholarship on race, allowing us both to reach and to learn from communities and the public beyond the academy.

Celebrate a visionary: “American Masters—W.E.B Du Bois: Rebel With A Cause” premieres TONIGHT, Tuesday, May 19 at 9/8c on PBS.

The new documentary examines Du Bois’s remarkable life from his birth, just five years after the Emancipation Proclamation, to his death, on the eve of the March on Washington in 1963, and how his legacy as an activist continues to resonate today.
