Kids yoga teachers—how quickly can you get BINGO? 😂🧘‍♀️

After teaching more than 5,000 kids yoga and mindfulness classes, I can in fact confirm that every single one of these has happened, and usually when I least expected it!

Because teaching movement, mindfulness and social-emotional learning to children is equal parts meaningful, magical and wonderfully unpredictable.

Back-to-school roll call! 🍎

If we haven’t met yet, I’m Tara—the founder and lead teacher behind The Mindfulness Movement™

My classroom looks a little different from most…

Some days it’s an elementary school. Other days it’s a library, community center, studio, summer camp or a room I’ve transformed with an overflowing cart of yoga mats, colorful props and laminated activities.

My background is in Child Psychology and Child Life, and I spent three years teaching yoga and mindfulness full-time in schools. After more than 5,000 real classes, children have taught me something incredibly important:

They do not have to be perfectly still to learn mindfulness or find their calm!

Sometimes regulation looks like breathing quietly. Sometimes it looks like stretching, stomping, laughing, creating, connecting or trying again.

That belief is at the heart of everything we do at The Mindfulness Movement—from kids yoga and movement-based social-emotional learning to after-school programs, camps, family workshops and educator resources.

If you’re a parent, teacher, school professional or kids yoga instructor who wants children to have more ways to feel confident, connected and successful, I’d love to have you here!

Follow The Mindfulness Movement for practical activities, real teaching insights and upcoming programs throughout the Twin Cities. 💓

Now let’s take attendance: Are you joining us as a parent, educator, kids yoga teacher—or a little bit of everything? What Minnesota community are you from?

Transforming your basement into a yoga studio is kinda chic

💅💓🧘‍♀️✨

But really...this might be one of my favorite birthday parties yet!

Yoga mats, mindful movement, relaxation, sparkly spa creations, and a whole lot of celebrating! All brought right into the birthday girl's home. 🙌

I love that kids' birthday parties don't have to mean renting a traditional party venue or doing the same thing everyone else is doing.

Sometimes an ordinary basement & a little imagination can become something soooo magical. ✨💕

The Mindfulness Movement™ brings creative kids yoga & mindfulness birthday experiences to families throughout the Twin Cities.

We can customize to your theme and help bring your vision to life so you can sit back, relax, and celebrate and actually ENJOY celebrating! 🥳

It looks like just a game…

But what I’m really teaching is:

NOTICE → PAUSE → PLAN

In this activity, kids move across the “river” using only a few stepping stones.

They have to:

→ notice where their body is
→ pause before rushing
→ plan the next safe step
→ adjust if their first idea doesn’t work
→ keep going without needing an adult to solve it for them

That’s why I love movement-based SEL!

We’re not just talking about self-regulation or problem-solving.

Kids are physically practicing it.

And the best learning often happens when they get stuck.

When a child reaches too far, loses balance, or realizes their plan won’t work, I don’t immediately fix it.

I ask:

“What do you notice?”
“What’s another safe choice?”
“What could your next step be?”

The goal isn’t speed…

The goal is learning how to pause, think, and mindfully choose what comes next. 💕

Teachers: where could you see yourself using this?!

Morning meeting?
Movement break?
SEL lesson?
Indoor recess?

I used to say some of these, too…

Then 5,000+ kids yoga and mindfulness classes changed the way I think about them!

Here’s what I say instead:

❌ “Calm down.”
Try: “What does your body need right now?”

Because “calm down” tells kids the outcome we want, but not necessarily how to get there.

Maybe their body needs movement.
Maybe they need quiet.
Maybe they need a breath, some space, help, or more time.

The goal isn’t for kids to be calm all the time.

The skill is learning to notice what’s happening and figure out what might help.

❌ “You’re okay.”
Try: “I’m here. What do you need?”

“You’re okay” usually comes from such a caring place. We want to reassure them.

But I’ve learned I don’t have to decide how an experience feels for a child in order to help them through it.

I can be reassuring AND curious.

❌ “Sit still and focus.”
Try: “What would help your body get ready to focus?”

This one changed so much for me!

Because the child who is wiggling, rocking, stretching or asking to move isn’t necessarily avoiding learning.

Sometimes movement is part of how they get ready to learn.

After thousands of classes, this is one of the biggest shifts I’ve made:

Don’t just ask kids to show us the skill.
Give them opportunities to practice it. 💛

Parents & educators: which one of these do you hear yourself saying most often?

And what phrase would YOU add to the list?

🍓 Okay… this might be my favorite movement break yet!

If Strawberry Shortcake was part of your childhood, you might need to save this one for the little ones in your life. 💗

I turned a little berry-sweet nostalgia into a playful yoga break kids can actually DO:

🌳 Berry Balance
💪 Warrior II
🍓 Strawberry Side Stretch
🐱 Cat Pose with Custard
🐶 Downward Dog with Pupcake
💗 And a cozy Child’s Pose to finish

Because sometimes kids don’t need to “sit still and calm down.”

Sometimes they need to MOVE first!

Movement can be part of regulation, not something kids have to earn after they’ve already regulated.

Save this for the next rainy day, classroom brain break, after-school reset, or “we have WAY too much energy right now” moment. 😂🍓

And send it to the parent, teacher, or Strawberry Shortcake kid-at-heart who would absolutely love this.

Which pose should we add to the berry yoga crew next? 🍓

Sometimes the BEST learning in kids yoga doesn’t look like yoga at all! 😂

Yes… they’re rolling themselves up in their yoga mats.

And yes… they absolutely LOVE it. 😂

But while it looks like pure silliness, I’m watching kids practice:

✨ Body awareness
✨ Problem-solving
✨ Persistence
✨ Confidence
✨ Independence
✨ And knowing when to ask for help

After teaching 5,000+ kids yoga and mindfulness classes, one of the biggest things I’ve learned is this:

Learning doesn’t always have to look serious to be meaningful.

And regulation doesn’t always have to look calm.

Sometimes kids need to wiggle, roll, laugh, experiment, get stuck, figure it out…and try again.

Sometimes it looks a whole lot like PLAY. 💕

Parents & educators: what’s something kids learn through play that adults sometimes underestimate?

I’d love to hear yours below. ↓

Your partner has to arrive WITH you.

At first, it looked like a simple relay.

Each pair carried one rolled yoga mat—or “campfire log”—toward something the entire group was building together.

But getting there first wasn’t how they succeeded.

They had to slow down when their partner slowed down. Adjust their grip. Communicate. Pay attention to another person’s body and pace.

And when the final log landed, every child could look at the finished campfire and know:

“I helped build that.”

We can explain cooperation to children. We can remind them to communicate, take turns, and work together.

But those words become more meaningful when children have an opportunity to actually experience what teamwork feels like.

That’s why I love movement-based social-emotional learning. The game draws children in—but underneath the play, they’re practicing communication, body awareness, problem-solving, patience, and shared responsibility.

This Campfire Log Teamwork Relay comes from my August “I Am Adventurous” curriculum inside Teach Smarter™—my upcoming done-for-you yoga, mindfulness, movement, and SEL membership for K–6 educators.

Teachers, counselors, PE teachers, homeschool educators, and kids yoga instructors: comment SMARTER and I’ll send the Teach Smarter™ waitlist details directly to your Messenger. 💛

Before you ask a child to set goals for the school year... give them space to create a vision first! 💛

One of my favorite activities from Mindful Start™ Back-to-School Empowerment Camp was watching the kids create their own school-year vision boards.

The finished boards were beautiful, but they weren’t the most meaningful part.

The real magic happened while the children chose their pictures.

Their choices opened conversations about:

✨ What they were excited to learn
✨ Something they wanted to practice
✨ How they hoped to connect with friends
✨ New things they felt ready to try
✨ Where they might need encouragement
✨ How they wanted school to feel

A traditional goal-setting worksheet asks, “What do you want to accomplish?”

A vision board also asks, “Who do you want to become, and how do you want this year to feel?”

That difference matters.

This creative back-to-school SEL activity helps children make their hopes visible while giving teachers, counselors, and caregivers meaningful insight into how to support them.

Students can write, draw, choose pictures, dictate their ideas, or create privately without being required to share. Then, they choose one small, manageable step that can help bring part of their vision to life.

I turned the complete activity into a ready-to-use 12-page printable for grades K–6, including:

✏️ A step-by-step teacher guide
💭 Student brainstorming and reflection prompts
🎨 A full-color vision board template
✂️ Four pages of pictures and affirmations
💛 Inclusive participation and sharing options

It’s perfect for the first week of school, classroom community building, morning meeting, school counseling, homeschool, or kids’ mindfulness programs.

Comment **VISION** and I’ll message you the direct link to see the complete printable activity. It’s on SALE in my digital shop. 💌

And please share this with a teacher who believes the first week of school should be about learning who their students are, not only what they can do.

Is planning somehow taking MORE energy than teaching?!

You sit down to prepare one kids yoga, mindfulness, or SEL lesson…and suddenly you have twelve tabs open, three saved posts, two half-finished printables, and no idea how everything is supposed to fit together. 😵‍💫

That’s exactly why I created Teach Smarter™.

After teaching more than 5,000 real kids yoga and mindfulness classes, I built the monthly curriculum system I wish I’d had:

✨ Four ready-to-teach K–6 lessons
✨ Connected breathing, yoga, movement, and SEL activities
✨ Student reflection pages and teacher guidance
✨ A bonus themed camp plan
✨ Live monthly group coaching

This isn’t another folder of disconnected teacher resources for you to organize.

Teach Smarter™ makes preparation feel like an afterthought, so you can save your energy for being present with your students and loving teaching again. 🩷
