⚠️ ATTENTION MEMBERS OF LOCAL 633! ⚠️
An Extreme Heat Warning has been issued for the Twin Cities metro and surrounding areas for at least the next four days, with the heat index (“feels like” temperature) expected to reach or exceed 100°F.
Please stay hydrated throughout the day—even after work. Heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke are serious medical emergencies, especially for those of us working in the construction industry.
Pay close attention to yourself and your coworkers over the coming days. Drink water regularly, take breaks in the shade when possible, and avoid excessive caffeine and energy drinks, which can contribute to dehydration. If you’re sweating heavily for long periods, replace electrolytes as well as fluids.
Watch for signs of heat illness, including:
Excessive fatigue
Dizziness
Headache
Muscle cramps
Nausea
Confusion
Heavy sweating or, in severe cases, hot, dry skin
Your contractor will have heat safety procedures in place, but everyone’s tolerance to heat is different.
If something doesn’t feel right, don’t ignore it. Speak up immediately.
The health and safety of everyone on the jobsite is more important than any schedule. Every Cement Mason—whether working Building or Highway Heavy—plays a vital role in completing our projects safely.
Take care of yourselves. Take care of each other. Let’s make sure everyone goes home safely at the end of the day.
