Ms. Mendes is our Student Choice Award Winner of the month! One student stated "She by far deserves this and I encourage giving her this award. She is not only just a mentor but an inspiration. She is so passionate and it inspires me to learn life and see life the way she does. She is an amazing person to vent to and also get feedback from, her best quality is her honesty. From her stories to her teaching, she is by far the Student Choice Award winner in my eyes." Another student nominated Ms. Mendes because "she teaches us real world skills, and debates real world problems with us to help us better understand the world we live in and feel prepared to graduate."
Students stated that Ms. Mendes best showed the core value of "embrace your future" because she is consistently helping them achieve their goals.

New Bedford Schools honor Juneteenth. ❤️🖤💚

As Union armies -including the 20th, 28th, 29th, and 31st USCT regiments that entered Galveston — defeated treason and slavery, emancipation and liberty had a new dawn.

On June 19, 1865, the news of freedom finally reached enslaved people in Galveston, Texas. The message and tradition of Juneteenth would spread from Texas northward, as African Americans resisted Jim Crow terrorism, preserved memory, built community, and sought the “warmth of other suns.”

The tireless commitment of so many Black scholars, families, veterans, educators, churches, and communities kept Juneteenth alive across generations.

That long work helped lead to President Joe Biden signing Juneteenth National Independence Day into law in 2021.

This day is a celebration of the joy of liberty. It is also a day to honor those who hold and carry the torch of Black history including the Martha Briggs Educational Club , New Bedford Historical Society and Human Rights Commission .

New Bedford is fortunate to have so many voices carrying and preserving our city’s fierce history as the “Gibraltar,” the rock of abolition — a place of refuge, resistance, and freedom.

June 19 – No School (Juneteenth)
June 22–26 – Final Examination Days; Early Release at 10:50 AM
June 29 – Last Day of School; Early Release at 10:50 AM
