Calling all tiny superheroes, storybook characters, spooky creatures and creative costumes.

Something new is coming to IUS Fest on October 24: the IUAA Southeast Region Children’s Costume Contest.

Children from newborn through age 12 can dress up, show off their creativity and join the fun. Store-bought costumes, homemade creations and everything in between are welcome, with judging divided by age group.

Registration opens at 9 a.m., and the costume contest runs from 10 a.m.–1 p.m.

Contestants will be judged on creativity and originality, presentation, overall appearance and age appropriateness. Each participant will also get a brief chance to showcase their costume for the judges.

All costumes must be age-appropriate, and dangerous props are not permitted.

Flashback Friday takes us back 40 years to September 1986, when The Southeast Horizon reported on a major fundraising effort benefiting IU Southeast.

The Campaign for Indiana University had been announced the previous fall with a university-wide goal of nearly $203 million over five years. While a formal goal for IU Southeast had not yet been set, the article reported that a preliminary campus goal of $1 million over the five-year campaign had been discussed.

The campaign highlighted the importance of private giving in supporting areas that public funds could not, including scholarships, academic programs and other campus priorities. Support was already coming from within the IU Southeast community, with faculty and staff pledging $47,000 to the campaign.

Four decades later, philanthropy continues to help create opportunities for IU students and strengthen our campuses.

Did you know?

IU Southeast alumnus Scott Carpenter has been appointed Superintendent of Schools for Connecticut’s Regional School District 19.

Carpenter earned his bachelor’s degree in biology from IU Southeast in 1988 before beginning a career in education that has spanned more than three decades. He started as a biology teacher at Lexington High School before moving into administration at Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School, where he later served as superintendent/principal.

Carpenter also holds graduate degrees from Boston University, Lehigh University, Harvard University and Northeastern University.

Congratulations to this IU Southeast alumnus on his latest leadership role in education.

Sherron Wilkerson's journey with Indiana University is a story of success, setbacks and second chances.

From being cut from his eighth-grade basketball team to leading Jeffersonville to its first boys basketball state championship, becoming a McDonald's All-American and playing for Bob Knight at IU, Wilkerson experienced remarkable highs and difficult challenges.

After his playing career took him overseas, another chapter of his IU story brought him to IU Southeast, where he earned his Bachelor of General Studies in 2008 and continued pursuing his dream of coaching.

Now the head coach at Jeffersonville High School, Wilkerson is using the lessons from his own journey to mentor the next generation.

He recently met with Josh Suiter, Director of Alumni Engagement at IU Southeast, at Jeffersonville High School to reflect on the moments that shaped his life and the lessons he carries with him today.

Alumni-Owned Business Spotlight: Martin's Body Shop

Martin’s Body Shop has been serving Southern Indiana for more than 55 years.

The business began providing auto body repair in May 1971 behind the feed mill in Ramsey, Indiana. After five years, Martin’s moved into a new facility at 150 Hwy 64 NE. In January 2004, the business and its 11 employees relocated to a new 20,000-square-foot facility at 8170 Schmidt Lane, featuring 30 bays for auto body repair.

In June 2020, Martin’s expanded with a second location in Georgetown, Indiana, allowing the business to serve even more customers throughout the Floyds K***s area.

Today, Martin’s Body Shop is owned by IU alumnus Doug Martin, who earned his Bachelor of Science in Public Affairs with a focus in Management from the O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs in 2011.

We’re proud to spotlight an IU alum making an impact through a longstanding Southern Indiana business.

It’s another week of IU Southeast Athletics, and the Grenadiers are at home for three matchups.

IU Southeast Volleyball hosts Brescia University Friday at 6 p.m. Before the match, join us for a tailgate party from 4:30–6 p.m. in the Athletics parking lot.

Volleyball returns to the court Tuesday at 6 p.m. against the University of the Cumberlands.

Men’s and Women’s Tennis are also at home this week, welcoming Hanover College Sunday at 10 a.m.

Come out and support the Grenadiers at IU Southeast.

Employer Spotlight: French Lick Resort

This week, we’re proud to highlight French Lick Resort, a historic Indiana destination and valued employer in our region.

The resort’s history dates back to 1845, when the French Lick Springs Hotel was established around the area’s mineral springs. Over the decades, French Lick and the nearby West Baden Springs Hotel became renowned destinations, with West Baden’s iconic 200-foot free-span dome standing as one of Indiana’s most recognizable architectural landmarks.

Following an extensive restoration by Cook Group in the mid-2000s, the two historic properties were brought together as French Lick Resort. Today, the resort combines its rich history with modern hospitality, recreation, dining, entertainment, and event experiences.

Beyond being a destination for visitors from across the country, French Lick Resort is an important employer and community partner.
