Last month the campus had the opportunity to participate in a Deliberative Dialogue event due to the outstanding leadership of Dr. Jean Abshire and the dedication of a group of our students. This video from the Council on Foreign Relations gives a small glimpse into the value of this event and how it aligns with our mission to help develop engaged citizens.

Deliberative Dialogue. On April 2, IU Southeast hosted a campuswide deliberative dialogue sponsored by the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) and the College Debates & Discourse (CD&D) Alliance, marking the university’s participation as the first campus in the nation selected for a new Spring 2026 national pilot initiative. Our professor Jean Abshire is a fellow with the CFR and worked with a group of students who met each week throughout the spring semester to bring this event to our campus.
The moderated session brought together students, faculty, staff, and guests to engage in structured discussion around the guiding question, “What factors should governments consider when developing and enforcing AI regulations?” Rather than adversarial debate, the dialogue emphasized respectful engagement, critical listening, and consideration of ethical, economic, social, and political trade-offs associated with artificial intelligence governance. Supported by CFR educational resources, CD&D’s participatory dialogue model, and student leadership, the event reinforced IU Southeast’s commitment to civic learning, civil discourse, and preparing students to thoughtfully engage complex public issues.
