St. Bartholomew is listed in Matthew, Mark, and Luke as one of Christ’s twelve apostles. However, John’s Gospel omits Bartholomew and lists Nathanael instead, revealing that this is the same person. Bartholomew is called by Christ in John 1:43-51. After Christ calls Philip, Phillip finds Bartholomew and informs him that he has found the Messiah. Bartholomew at first scoffs at this, claiming that nothing good can come from Nazareth. But when Christ meets Bartholomew, He reveals that He has seen Bartholomew under the fig tree. In response, Nathanael calls Christ the Son of God and the King of Israel. After this, Bartholomew followed Christ during His earthly ministry and then was present with the twelve after His death and resurrection. According to tradition Bartholomew traveled as far as the Indian subcontinent to share the Gospel. While weighing the options available for birth control, it is important to remember that children are a gift in every circumstance. Psalm 127:3 celebrates, “Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, the fruit of the womb a reward.” God does not make mistakes when creating life. Each life should be celebrated as a miracle because it is a gift from God. This Gospel-motivated promise should be the primary motivation for couples as they discern use of the Pill.

As couples seek forms of birth control to prevent pregnancy, one of the most frequently used forms is the Pill. The birth control pill exists in two forms: combination and progestin only. The former releases the hormones estrogen and progestin while the latter only releases progestin. Both forms work to prevent pregnancy in multiple ways, namely by preventing ovulation, thickening cervical mucus to make it a hostile environment to s***m, and/or thinning the wall of the uterine lining to prevent a fertilized egg from implanting. While the first two methods of prevention work to keep s***m and egg separate, the last effect, thinning uterine lining, actually prevents the implantation of a new baby. This third action makes the hormonal birth control pill an abortifacient, meaning the pill has the potential of ending the life of a fertilized egg, a new human being.

While not all mechanisms of the Pill are an abortifacient, the pill does disturb a woman’s menstrual cycle, which can cause changes to her quality of life.

St. Johann Gerhard was born on October 17th, 1582, in Quedlinburg Germany as one of seven kids. As a teenager he became very ill and found comfort in studying theology. He vowed that if God healed him, he would become a pastor. After his recovery he became a pastor, ultimately becoming a professor of theology at the university in Jena. During his time as a professor, he wrote many apologetic works responding to Roman Catholicism and Unitarianism.

Over the course of his life, Gerhard experienced a lot of hardship, including various illnesses, the loss of his first wife, the Thirty Years War, and persecution for his beliefs. Gerhardt never forgot the promise of the resurrection, even up his deathbed in 1637, where his final words were, “Come, come, Lord, come.” To learn more about St. Johann Gerhard visit All the Household.

By reconciling sinners to God through His blood, Jesus gives more than everlasting life; He gives everlasting life in communion with God. Life in communion with God is the truly abundant life, in which God gives His sheep all that they need for this world and the next. Knowing that Christ has laid down His life to give this abundant life to all people, we strive to be Gospel-motivated voices, caring about both the physical and spiritual lives of each one of our neighbors from the moment of their conception until their natural death, regardless of their physical condition.
