We were recently featured in The Union

Wolf Craft School and Collective is a creative hub in downtown Nevada City, with hands-on classes at The Tinnery on York Street and now the newly opened Pottery Studio and Art Café at 244 Commercial Street.

The newly opened studio and café is a place where you can make, paint, embroider, or carve something with your hands while enjoying a coffee, tea, spritzer, b**r, w**e, or a bite to eat.

Owner of Wolf Craft, Leslie Barbazette, purchased and renovated the building on Commercial Street, built in 1863, that has been the home of Jackson’s Grocery, Osborn Woods, and more recently, JJ Jackson’s.

The cafe’s interior decor is done with natural tones and large window seating that creates an airy, light, functional space with a studio vibe. Guests can stroll into the pottery studio with nine pottery wheels and stools, counters made for glazing clay in different colors, and 3 kilns for firing it.

A wall of reeded glass keeps the two spaces private but full of natural light.

On any given morning or evening, one may observe classes underway, or in the mid-day hours, members arrive to work on their own.

In the cafe, each table has two levels, the cafe’s manager, Hanna Blinder, said. The place mats and table settings are designed for menu items such as open-faced tuna melts or an empanada and salad, accompanied by a circular raised platform to model clay or paint a pot or mug with your own design.

Barbazette has created a business with the idea of making and creating, as well as socializing, relaxing, and enjoying unique food items.

Friday night “try it” experience is a great way to get out of the house as the days get shorter. From 6-7:30 pm you can give the wheel a twirl and come back in a couple of weeks to pick up your finished piece/s. We’re excited to bring you a three week hand-building course designed for kids ages 7-12 in November and teens ages 13-17 in December.

Students will explore the playful and tactile world of clay while creating a special ceramic box for holding treasures; tiny objects, found treasures, keepsakes, or anything meaningful to them.

Led by ceramic artist and teacher Vanessa Erlich, this class will introduce students to hand-building and slab-rolling techniques they can even carry on through the holidays at home.

With a focus on creativity, exploration, and connection to the natural world, this class encourages students to slow down, get their hands dirty, and discover the joy of making something entirely their own!

Create a small ceramic altar that reflects something meaningful to you in this two-day workshop with ceramic artist Deborah Bridges.

In this beginner-friendly class, you’ll learn how to build a personal altar in clay using simple hand building techniques, no previous ceramic experience necessary. Your altar can be a space for remembrance, intention, inspiration, ritual, or simply a collection of objects that hold personal meaning.

Day 1: Build your altar using slabs and other hand building techniques, then sculpt small elements to personalize your piece.

Day 2: Glaze your finished altar and add color and character to make it uniquely yours.

Come with an idea, a meaningful object, or simply an open mind. There’s no right way to create a personal altar—this workshop is an invitation to make something that feels like you.

We’ve had lots of questions about what happens at the cafe, how it works, and what we serve, so here are our menus! Come eat, drink, and craft. 🤗

We partnered with Tony from Heartwood to create our menu. He’s a wonderful chef with strong connections to farmers through Sierra Harvest and access to some of the best produce around. We’re also serving Mapu’s empanadas (formerly at the Fern) and Lexi’s famous smoked trout dip. The only things not coming from Nevada City are our guilty-pleasure desserts: Snickers ice cream bars and IT’S-ITs!

For drinks, we’ve skipped the espresso machine since there are plenty around town. Instead, we partnered with Wild & Tea on a range of tea steamers and spritzers, alongside delicious drip and iced coffee from Red Bay Coffee.

Our b**r and w**e license is on its way and should arrive in 7–10 business days. 😅 Once it does, we’ll have a rotating selection of red, white, and orange w**es, b**rs from Crooked Lane, and Gold Vibe Kombucha.

You don’t have to craft to spend time here. Come for a meal, a drink, or a little time with friends. We’d love to see you.
