There has been some confusion regarding the recent school tax increases following the Neptune City Town Council Meeting on Monday, July 27, 2026, and we would like to provide clarification for our community.
First and foremost, we recognize that any increase in taxes has an impact on the residents of Neptune City. We understand the concerns and financial pressures that families and taxpayers face, and we take our responsibility to be good stewards of taxpayer dollars very seriously.
Here is the breakdown:
2025–2026 School Year
• School tax increase: 14.7%
• 4.25% was applied to taxpayers during the 2025–2026 tax year.
• The remaining 10.45% was deferred and applied during the 2026–2027 tax year.
2026–2027 School Year
• School tax increase: 6.11%
• The full 6.11% was applied during the 2026–2027 tax year, with no deferral.
As a result, taxpayers saw a combined 16.56% school tax impact during the 2026–2027 tax year (10.45% deferred from the prior year + 6.11% for the current year).
It is important to note that over the two-year period, the total school tax increase is exactly what was approved through the Neptune City school budgets for the 2025–2026 and 2026–2027 school years.
In addition, the Neptune City School District reduced staffing expenditures by approximately $250,000 for the 2026–2027 school year. These reductions were implemented while maintaining appropriate class sizes, preserving essential student services, and ensuring there was no negative impact on the educational experience of our students. This approach reflects the district’s ongoing commitment to fiscal responsibility while continuing to provide a high-quality education for our students.
We remain committed to providing transparent, accurate information so our community can stay informed and have a clear understanding of the facts. We appreciate the continued partnership of our residents as we work together to support the students of Neptune City.
