Director Joe Nevolo has taken strides when it comes to alternative teaching methods. In his thirty years of instruction, Joe has encountered many special needs students including children suffering from Down’s syndrome, autism, dyslexia, attention deficit disorder, and even blindness. Not once has Joe turned his back on the opportunity to enrich a student’s life in the music field. Instead he became creative in applying new techniques he gained while instructing at the Long Island Drum Center in addition to his own nontraditional methods. By using a unique system of brightly colored symbols and numbers along with glow in the dark drum sticks, sound activated black lights, and projected diagrams, Joe developed a groundbreaking technique. Joe has also found great use in video aids and phonetics. This audio-visual approach not only simplifies the learning method and helps eliminate external distractions, but it is also fun for the students. Big Beat Studio works hand in hand with Easter Seals to accommodate those with needs. History:
Big Beat Studio was founded 25 years ago by Joe Nevolo. As a published and experienced musician, Joe has played with some of the biggest names in the industry including members of Bon Jovi, Billy Joel, N’Sync, and Julio Iglesias… not to mention he was a finalist for Kiss! Formerly a teacher at such distinguished schools as DCI in New York and the Long Island Drum Center, Joe has gained worldwide recognition for his noteworthy teaching methods. He has also been featured in prominent magazines such as Modern Drummer and Creative Drummer Magazine. Joe’s extensive knowledge and expertise offers a truly one of a kind learning experience. At the mere age of five, Joe took up drum instruction under his father, Joe Nevolo Sr., whom himself was a professional musician. In Joe’s youth, he drummed in bands such as The Momentums, Baby Blue, and Jesse Bolt. He has performed and recorded with guitar virtuosos such as Stephen Ross and Greg Howe. Howe’s “High Gear” album, featuring Joe, lead to a national tour and airtime on MTV’s Headbangers Ball. Joe has performed with Bruce Kulick in The Good Rats, Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush, and has recorded with blues sensation Pat Travers. Joe kept the beat for the well-known theatrical rock band Phantoms Opera, which consisted of current members of Bon Jovi's band. He performed with New Jersey's own late great Blues guitarist Bernie Brausewetter with the band BB & The Stingers. Joe still records today with “international progressive rock band” Shadow Gallery, which have gained great acclaim. They performed a nine country European tour and we’re featured on MTV in Europe. Joe now records regularly with Jersey guitar legend, Lenny Molinari of the popular tri-state band Yasgur Farm. Joe is endorsed by Peace Drums and Gibraltar Hardware. Having a large client base, traveling from as far as Connecticut and Delaware to study under him, Joe decided to open shop and spread his expertise and love of music to those around him. He then hand selected a group of highly skilled teachers to enrich the learning environment, some of which have instructed family members of Bruce Springsteen, Clive Davis, and Richie Sambora to name a few. Many of the students at Big Beat Studio have moved on to be reputable themselves, such as Ron Lipnicki of Overkill and Nicole Atkins. In July of 2005, a student whom Joe instructed and sponsored won the World’s Fastest Feet Competition and placed second in the World’s Fastest Hand Competition at the International Drumming Contest. With a friendly, knowledgeable staff passionate for music accompanied with excellent equipment and studio space, Big Beat Studio wants to help you to expand your talent and become the next big thing.
