Of the five lizards that you can find living in Ohio here is one of the more common ones! This little one likes to live in wooded areas with rocky outcroppings, log piles, and other places for them to crawl in and hide. This is the common five-lined skink! The five-lined skink like many lizards can drop its tail. Now, why would it want to do that you might ask? Well, it's a last-ditch effort of defense, they let go of the tail so the predator gets distracted and they scurry away to a hidey-hole. The skink can grow back the tail too, it just won't be the same. They are, as the name suggests, part of the skink family which has 3 members that call Ohio home. So here on World Lizard Day venture out into your local park or woods and keep an eye out for our scaly little friends!

While most might only think about best friends in the human sense, today we want to turn your attention to another kind of relationship, one with fungi and a tree! They two share a network underground; the fungi have mycelium which acts like a root system and the tree has its roots. Together they have a symbiotic relationship meaning they both benefit from one another. With this relationship, they are able to face the hardships of life together by sharing! In their case, it's resources such as water, nutrients, and sugars! They share just like many of us with our own best friends. Show your best friends some appreciation for National Best Friends Day today!

Happy National Smile Day!
What do you know about different animal smiles? Let's take a look at a few!

The bobcat is a ferocious predator that is considered a carnivore. You can tell this by looking at its smile! They are equipped with large canine teeth and sharp incisors, premolars, and molars. This tells us that they will eat only meat as they are designed to do!

The raccoon, sometimes called the trash panda, will (as the name implies) indulge itself in trash and various other foods. They are omnivores! That means they eat both plant and animal matter. You can tell by the teeth once again with sharp canine teeth and flatter incisors, premolars, and molars! Raccoons are very resourceful taking advantage of resources such as our trash which is also why many people don’t like them. It could be considered admirable how resourceful they can be though!

Last but not least we have the white-tailed deer! White-tailed deer are herbivorous species meaning they only eat plants. The teeth again tell the story of what they eat! All of their teeth are flat and designed to grind on plants all day long!
