Not every cool science image makes a great phenomenon.
A strong phenomenon gives students something they can actually observe, question, and try to explain.
When you’re choosing a phenomenon for your next lesson, look for three things:
Real-World
Students should be able to connect what they are seeing to something that actually happens in the world around them.
Observable
There needs to be something students can notice. A change, a pattern, an interaction, a structure, a behavior, or something unexpected that makes them look a little closer.
Relevant
The phenomenon should connect directly to the science students are trying to figure out. It shouldn’t just be interesting. It should create a reason to learn the content.
Then comes the most important part:
Don’t explain it yet.
Give students time to notice.
Give them time to wonder.
Let them make predictions.
Let them argue about what they think is happening.
Let them decide what they still need to know.
The phenomenon isn’t the lesson.
It’s the reason for the lesson.
And when students have a reason to figure something out, science becomes much more than information we ask them to remember.
