How do children in play based preschools learn to write letters???? THEY WRITE WHILE THEY PLAY! Our classroom was transformed into an Amazon warehouse. They children wrote their names on mailing labels. They used packing tape and sharpie markers. Tearing tape is fabulous for fine motor muscles. They packed up so many fun things in the classroom and delivered them to the teachers. We got blocks, babies and puppies in the mail. It was so exciting!!! When children are excited and interested in what they are doing, that is when great things happen. We play and we learn letters!!!!

We did so much in todays yoga class. The children’s bodies moved and worked so hard but their imaginations worked hard too. Each child was given an object (a ninja, butterfly, praying mantis for example) and asked to create a yoga pose that matched their creature. Watching them was amazing. They really looked at their object and then created poses that were so imaginative. CAN YOU GUESS THE POSES IN THE PICTURES??? we love your visits.

This is what Preschool literacy looks like in our class. We are making tickets for the puppet shows we are planning on our homemade puppet theater. “How do I write TICKET?” “I bet it starts with a T … I hear the T sound!”
We do not do letter of the week or worksheets or flash cards. We model writing, we make words and letters available all around the environment, we talk about the sounds the letters make, we read TONS of books and listen for rhyming patterns. We PLAY and still learn letters!!!
