➡️I attended a professional development session recently where, during a discussion about student needs, someone said, "They'll be fine," referring to gifted students. I know it wasn't meant to be dismissive. In fact, I think it's a phrase many of us have heard or even said.

But it stayed with me. "They'll be fine" is a very low bar.

Gifted students often do fine. They earn good grades. They follow the rules. They make it through school. But doing fine isn't the same as growing.

When we assume they'll be fine, it's easy to overlook the need for challenge, intellectual peers, opportunities to think deeply, and support for their social and emotional development. It's a little like placing a butterfly in a glass jar. It may be safe. It may survive. But the lid still limits where it can go.

This is my reminder as the school year begins to create spaces where gifted students experience meaningful challenge and learn that productive struggle is part of growth. It's also a reminder to encourage my colleagues to embrace productive struggle rather than rescue students from it. Those moments are often where the deepest learning happens.

I created this graphic for Tennessee Association for the Gifted - TAG, Tennessee Association for the Gifted -TAG, but I hope it resonates with many of you as well.🥰🧠
