Louisiana has taken an important step toward a more trauma-informed justice system.

With the passage of House Bill 126 (Act 616), victims testifying in s*x offense trials may now be accompanied by a trained facility dog while testifying in court, when one is available. The law expands existing protections that already supported children and individuals with developmental disabilities.

For survivors facing one of the most difficult moments of their lives, the steady presence of a facility dog can provide comfort, emotional grounding, and support.

We applaud Louisiana lawmakers for recognizing the role facility dogs can play in helping people participate in the justice process with dignity and confidence.
