The NPSB cafeteria teams deserve a spotlight every week for the delicious and nutritious meals they provide for our students day in and day out, but this week, we’re giving them center stage for National School Lunch Week!🎪

This year’s theme is “Cafeteria Circus: Where Nutrition Takes Center Stage,” and while our cafeteria teams may agree that some days can feel a little like a circus (especially when a line full of hungry students comes through the doors) they always keep what matters most at the forefront: fueling our students and providing them with the nutrition they need to learn and succeed.

School meals play an important role in helping our students learn, grow and thrive, and our cafeteria teams work hard every day to make that possible. The National School Lunch Program has been serving students since 1946 and today provides nutritious meals to nearly 30 million children every school day. School meals help support student health and well-being, reduce childhood hunger and give students the fuel they need to focus and learn.

Let’s give a round of applause to the amazing people who make nutrition take center stage every day!👏

We're extremely proud to celebrate Jonathan Parish, Jr. High Social Studies & ELA teacher at Natchitoches Magnet School, who continues to be recognized for his outstanding dedication to students, academic excellence and service to his community🏆

Mr. Parish was named the NPSB District-Level Middle School Teacher of the Year for 2025–2026 and was also selected as a Louisiana Department of Education Teacher of the Year Semifinalist.

Most recently, Mr. Parish was honored as a Brookshire’s Teacher of the Season, a recognition celebrating educators who demonstrate exceptional dedication, innovation and impact in the classroom! The first picture captures Eddie Medley, Super 1 Foods Store Manager in Natchitoches, presenting this recognition to Mr. Parish.

He was also honored as Teacher of the Year for 2025–2026 at the Kiwanis Club of Natchitoches Annual Awards Banquet on October 1. This recognition honors his commitment to service, leadership, integrity and dedication to the community — qualities that align with the Kiwanis mission of improving the world “one child and one community at a time.” The second photo captures Mr. Parish being recognized at the Kiwanis Annual Awards Banquet.

Congratulations to Mr. Parish! His commitment to his students, school and community continues to make an impact. We are proud to have him representing NPSB!

Third grade is a critical milestone in literacy development as students make an important shift from applying foundational reading skills to using reading as a tool to learn across all subjects📚

Strong literacy skills provide the foundation for communication, lifelong learning and active participation in our communities. That’s why supporting reading proficiency and helping every student become a confident, capable reader is a priority.

NPSB’s revised third-grade pupil progression plan outlines the literacy expectations for students and the support available to help them succeed.

Parents and families, we encourage you to learn more! Talk with your child’s teacher during conferences about their literacy progress, available resources and ways you can support your child’s reading development at home.

First grade is an important year for literacy development as students build the reading and writing skills that will support their learning for years to come📖 As students develop skills in phonics, vocabulary and comprehension, we want to make sure families understand the literacy expectations and the support available to help their children succeed.

Under NPSB’s revised pupil progression plan, first grade students must meet specific literacy proficiency standards for promotion to second grade. Students will have three opportunities to demonstrate proficiency throughout the year.

Parents and families, we encourage you to learn more! Talk with your child’s teacher about their DIBELS 8th results, available resources and ways you can support your child’s literacy development at home.

Take a look at the graphic for more information about first-grade literacy proficiency, assessment opportunities and resources to help your child become a strong reader!
