Late nights. Big ideas. Real engineering. 🚀
The Southwest Space Settlement Design Competition, hosted at renowned environmental sustainability research facility, Biosphere 2, pushed high school students to think like industry professionals! Back in January, our future engineers collaborated, problem-solved, and created designs for life beyond Earth.

Congratulations to all the students of the Southwest on their successful weekend!

Congratulations to our SSDC Alum, Logan Hanssler on being named one of the 2026 Marshall Scholars. We are so proud of you on your well deserved honor! Read about Logan’s plan for the scholarship below 🛰️:

The Space Settlement Design Competitions set me on my path in aerospace, inspiring me to pursue collaborative space system design long after high school. At the University of Chicago, that passion led me to co-found and help lead the PULSE Program, a student-run effort developing novel space-to-ground laser communication technology.

Through PULSE, I’ve seen firsthand the limitations of today’s radio-based space communication and the urgent need for better laser systems that can transmit far more data from orbit to Earth. With the Marshall Scholarship, I plan to help close those gaps—first through an MSc in Optics and Photonics at Imperial College London, then a MSc by Research in Physics at Durham University, focusing on laser and adaptive optics technologies.

While in the UK, I also hope to support and collaborate with SSEF, helping grow their Space Settlement Design programs and strengthening connections between UK and US students. My goal is to build lifelong transatlantic networks of young people passionate about space—starting in the SSDCs and continuing throughout their careers, particularly through my role as Vice Chair of AEC’s Alumni Committee.
