A SECOND INCOME SHOULD NOT REQUIRE A SECOND LIFE.

One of the first objections I hear from professionals is:

“I already have a full-time career. Where would I find the time?”

Fair question.

I’m not trying to add another 40-hour job to my week.

I’m building something alongside my actuarial career—in focused blocks, one skill and one step at a time.

Some days that means training.

Some days it means follow-up, content, or improving how I communicate.

The goal is not to become busier.

It is to build something consistently and sustainably beside a career I value.

That’s what Career AND Business means to me.

أنا مش بحاول أضيف شغلانة Full-Time تانية فوق شغلي ومسؤولياتي.

أنا بتعلم أبني حاجة جنب شغلي كـ Actuary، بخطوات صغيرة ومنتظمة.

الهدف مش إني أبقى مشغول أكتر.

الهدف إني أبني اختيار إضافي بشكل أقدر أستمر عليه.

الصلاة والاستعداد مش عكس بعض. 🙏

ساعات بنصلي إن ربنا يفتح باب…

لكن لما الباب يتفتح، يا ترى إحنا مستعدين ندخل منه؟

الهجرة.
تغيير مجال الشغل.
امتحانات الـ Actuarial.
والبداية من جديد أكتر من مرة.

في كل مرحلة من دول، الصلاة كانت جزء أساسي بالنسبة لي.

لكن كان فيه جزء مطلوب مني أنا كمان:

أذاكر.
أتعلم.
أستعد.
وأعمل اللي عليّ.

الإيمان بالنسبة لي مش إني أقعد مستني أشوف النتيجة هتنجح ولا لأ.

الإيمان هو إني أثق في ربنا… وفي نفس الوقت أكون أمين في الجزء اللي مطلوب مني.

«قَلْبُ الإِنْسَانِ يُفَكِّرُ فِي طَرِيقِهِ، وَالرَّبُّ يَهْدِي خَطْوَتَهُ.»

نصلي.
ونستعد.
ونعمل اللي علينا.

وبعدين نسيب النتيجة في إيد ربنا.

Prayer and preparation go together. Faith means trusting God with the outcome while being faithful in the preparation, learning, and work that are our responsibility.

ربنا يبارك أسبوعكم ويقود خطواتكم. 🙏

“مش بعرف” مش معناها “مش هعرف.”

كل مجال جديد له مرحلة بنبدأ فيها من الصفر.

وده حصل معايا أكتر من مرة في حياتي المهنية… وبيحصل دلوقتي وأنا ببني حاجة جديدة جنب شغلي كـ Actuary.

مش كل فرصة مناسبة لكل شخص.

لكن قبل ما ترفض حاجة لأنك معندكش خبرة فيها، افهمها الأول.

Learn first. Decide later.

20 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE CAN BE 20 YEARS OF GROWTH…

OR ONE YEAR REPEATED 20 TIMES.

Experience and growth are not automatically the same thing.

Time gives us experience.

Growth requires something more:

Curiosity.
Adaptation.
Feedback.
And sometimes the willingness to become a beginner again.

My own path has required that more than once.

Engineering education → teaching → immigration → actuarial work → building something new alongside my career.

Every transition required new skills.

But none of them erased what came before.

They added another layer.

That’s how I think about professional growth today:

Experience tells you what has worked.
Learning prepares you for what comes next.

‎الخبرة مهمة جدًا، لكن عدد السنين لوحده مش معناه نمو.

‎النمو محتاج إننا نفضل مستعدين نتعلم ونتغير، وحتى نرجع نبدأ في حاجة جديدة لو احتجنا.

Small visual update. Bigger clarity.

Over the last few months, I’ve been refining what I want this page to represent.

The answer became simpler:

CAREER AND BUSINESS — not career OR business.

I value my actuarial career.
I’m not building something because I want to escape it.

I’m building a disciplined second income alongside it — creating more options, more flexibility, and more long-term control.

And that’s what I want to share more clearly here:

Practical lessons from career, business, risk, discipline, learning, and building something step by step while keeping the career you worked hard for.

If you’re a professional who has ever thought:

“I want more options, but I don’t want to burn the bridges I already built.”

You’re in the right place.

Build options. Don’t burn bridges.

The worst time to start building options is when you suddenly need them.

Preparation and fear are not the same thing.

Fear waits for the storm and reacts.

Preparation uses the sunny days wisely.

We build skills, relationships, and options before pressure forces the decision.

أحسن وقت تبني فيه مهارة، علاقة، أو اختيار جديد…
هو قبل ما تحتاجه.

In 2007, a $380 monthly car payment led me to an unexpected lesson about second income.

At the time, I was teaching at a college.

My wife and I needed a second car so she could have her own, and the payment would be around $380 a month.

So I did what seemed practical:

I went looking for a second job.

My original plan wasn’t glamorous.

I was prepared to go back to the kind of general work I had done when I first came to America in 2005—shipping, scanning boxes, whatever was available.

But at the recruiting office, I asked:

“Do you have anything more specialized?”

Because of my engineering education, they told me about a company hiring technicians to repair laptops.

There was one problem.

I had to pass a technical test.

I failed it. Barely.

They gave me another opportunity the following week.

So I prepared.

I went back to engineering knowledge I hadn’t professionally used for years, studied what I needed, took the test again—

and passed.

After training, within about a month, I became highly proficient at the job.

But that wasn’t the hardest part.

I would teach until around 3 or 4 PM, go home, eat a quick dinner, and leave for my second job.

Many nights I worked until 1 AM.

Some weekends, until 4 AM.

I did that for about six months.

Then, in December 2007, something changed.

I started my actuarial career.

Instead of continuing to carry two jobs, I was able to replace both with the next stage of my professional journey.

Looking back, that second job mattered.

But it was never supposed to be the destination.

It was a bridge.

Sometimes the answer isn’t simply:

“How can I work more?”

A better long-term question may be:

“What can I learn and build now that creates better options later?”

في 2007 كنت بشتغل في الكلية الصبح، وبالليل فني تصليح لابتوبات علشان أوفر قسط عربية تانية للأسرة.

استمريت بالشكل ده حوالي 6 شهور، لحد ما بدأت شغلي كـ Actuary في ديسمبر 2007.

الشغل التاني حل مشكلة في وقتها…

لكنه كان جسر، مش وجهة نهائية.

وأحيانًا السؤال مش بس:

إزاي أشتغل أكتر؟

يمكن السؤال الأهم يكون:

إيه اللي أقدر أتعلمه وأبنيه النهارده علشان يكون عندي اختيارات أفضل بكرة؟

هل سبق واشتغلت شغل إضافي لفترة علشان تحقق هدف معين أو تعدّي مرحلة معينة؟

ليه لازم نجاح حاجة جديدة في حياتك يكون معناه نهاية حاجة ناجحة عندك بالفعل؟

أنا مش ببني business علشان أهرب من شغلي.
ومش مستني اليوم اللي أقول فيه: خلاص… دلوقتي لازم أختار.

أنا قضيت سنين أبني career أنا بحبه وبقدّره، ومش شايف إن النجاح لازم يكون اختيار بين طريقين.

بالنسبة لي الفكرة مش:

Career OR Business.

الفكرة:

Career AND Business.

الـcareer بيديني خبرة، تطور مهني، واستقرار أنا بقدّره.

والـbusiness بيديني بُعد مختلف:
فرصة أبني حاجة بتاعتي، أتعلم مهارات جديدة، وأضيف income layer تانية لحياتي.

وده الفرق بالنسبة لي بين:

Replacement ❌
و
Integration ✅

أنا مش ببني واحدة علشان في يوم تستبدل التانية.

أنا ببني الاتنين علشان يكملوا بعض.

لأن بناء حاجة جديدة مش لازم معناه إنك تهدّ حاجة ناجحة موجودة بالفعل.

Learn first. Build gradually. Integrate intentionally.

I don’t see building a business as an eventual replacement for a career I value. I see them as complementary layers. My career provides professional growth, experience, and stability; building a business gives me ownership, new skills, and an additional income layer. For me, the goal isn’t Career OR Business. It’s Career AND Business.

A good income can still have one point of failure.

As an actuary, I’ve spent years thinking about risk.

And one principle appears again and again:

Concentration creates vulnerability.

That doesn’t mean the thing you’re relying on is bad.

It simply means you’re relying heavily on one thing.

A good career can be valuable.
A strong salary can be valuable.
A stable employer can be valuable.

I value my career.

But if nearly all of your income depends on one employer, one position, or one professional path, there is still concentration risk.

I learned that lesson personally when, after nine years with one employer, circumstances changed.

It didn’t make me anti-employment.

It changed the question I ask.

Instead of:

“Is my job secure?”

I started asking:

“If something changes, how many options have I built?”

That’s a very different question.

And you don’t have to wait for something to go wrong before you start answering it.

Security isn’t certainty.
Security is having options.

بالعربي باختصار:
الشغل الكويس والدخل الكويس نعمة، وأنا مقدّر جدًا شغلي ومهنتي.
لكن الاعتماد على مصدر واحد فقط يفضل فيه نسبة مخاطرة.
بالنسبة لي، الأمان الحقيقي مش إن مفيش حاجة هتتغير… الأمان إن يبقى عندي اختيارات لو الظروف اتغيرت.
