Now you know: To get a sense of the vast size of our universe, 5.88 trillion miles equals one light year. Light is the fastest thing that science has discovered. Light travels at a velocity of 299,793 km per second (186,283 miles per second) in a vacuum and at practically the same speed in our atmosphere. The distance light travels in 1 second is roughly equivalent to seven times around Earth at the equator. Our galaxy, The Milky Way, is about 100,000 light years across. A distant galaxy, The Eagle Nebula, is about 7,000 light years from Earth. The 'Pillars' of Eagle Nebula are made of hydrogen gas and dust and are estimated to be 1 light year, or 5.88 trillion miles (9.5 trillion km) in length.
