👋 Meet our Senior Essay Coach!

Angel S. Brown is a storyteller, writer, and educator who believes that stories shape everything. Her story begins in Houston, Texas, as the child of Jamaican immigrants in a single-parent household. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Duke University, where she competed as a Division I Women's Lacrosse goalkeeper— earning an ACC Top 6 for Service and three consecutive All-ACC Honor Roll awards. Angel became the first female recipient of the Duke Athletics Heidrick Leadership Postgraduate Scholarship for demonstrated leadership, character, and community service. She went on to earn a Master's in Biomedical Sciences from Duke University School of Medicine.

For the past fifteen years, Angel has been rooted in Durham, North Carolina, where her work has spanned institutional equity education, community organizing, neighborhood stewardship, and storytelling consulting. She has served as a Duke Alumni Admissions Interviewer.

As an emerging author, Angel has been awarded competitive mentorships, fellowships, and residencies in support of her journey to literary publishing. Her creative work centers on crafting narratives that spark compassion, confidence, and consciousness in readers of all ages.

Through her values of dignity, community, and love, Angel cultivates a legacy of generational impact. She looks forward to coaching students to discover and strengthen their authentic voice, build confidence as writers, and develop storytelling skills that extend far beyond the college application.

📍Yesterday, a family said they weren't interested in just doing things to create a college resume. Instead, they committed to the full process of self-discovery starting in 9th grade with . That choice will move this student from a box checker, to someone who knows how to find authentic ways to spend their time/energy/resources and build relationships that reflect their values.

🤝 Commitment is compelling. It's not forced, it's natural.

🧶 We love pulling threads together in the application. Our process is designed to uncover why and how you do things, not just listing your different interests.

Parenting is incredibly hard. Yesterday, I went to a summit that thoughtfully unpacked each stage of raising kids ready to launch as independent adults. Here are a few great nuggets:

🌱 Discomfort is the price of admission to a meaningful life. Stress can be growth-giving if we allow it to be, but knowing what causes stress, how we manage it, and where we go for support makes all the difference in healthy coping. Calm is contagious.

🤓 Smart people learn from their mistakes, wise people learn from the mistakes of others.

1) Play the long game 🏃
2) Prioritize health over happiness

Tonight I led a workshop for a room full of amazing parents and students at Carolina Collegiate. We talked about how to make the most of 9th grade, particularly at a brand new high school. 🏫✨

On the college admissions side, I loved reading files from students coming from new schools because they were the pioneers 🧭 - the ones who helped build the fabric of a school, those who saw/seized opportunities for growth without having upperclassmen to compete with for leadership roles, and the real leaders who took initiative to create something better for the generations of students to come. 🛠️

These pioneer families are modeling how important it is to build tolerance for uncertainty. Trying and failing and iterating is where growth comes, but it all starts with risk. And what better time to try than while living at home when you have a safety net to build tools and skills to navigate setbacks.

When is the last time you let your student experience the productive struggle? Life is messy and mistakes happen. Colleges want to know that students have what it takes to work through hard things and become better for it.

Related and unsolicited high school parenting advice from the parents I've studied and my own study of human development over the past 20 years...
❤️ Be patient in navigating change.
❤️ Manage your own emotions.
❤️ Affirm your belief in their abilities and remind them you'll be there even if (and especially when) it's unclear to listen (not to solve it for them).
❤️ Build trust with the other people influencing your student's life.
❤️ Help your student find a sense of purpose to stay rooted in who they are.

What do you think? Distinguishing between familiar campuses 15-30 minutes away from each other can feel personal—people have strong feelings about these schools. But underneath that deep loyalty and pride are three distinct campus types with unique student bodies and cultures.

Focus more on the kind of experiences you want and people you want to surround yourself with, and less on the name of the institution.

Discerning your "type" will help you figure out which schools feel “just right." While Goldilocks only found one - know that there will be many schools that fit your type! Start with who you are to find the matches!

I love the global experiences and cultural awareness that Kalamazoo College brought into my life. The fact that my friends and roommates were often abroad was the norm, but they're still the kind of best friends where you just pick up where you left off last.

My semester abroad was spent living with a native Oaxacan family while doing anthropological field work in a small pueblo. 🇲🇽 I trained for softball season with a local minor league baseball team, stood out as that tall American girl in salsa dancing classes, traveled through the mountains and beaches, and may have been on the front page of the newspaper singing karaoke. 🥎💃🎤

Later that year, I earned my first B in college after skipping 2 weeks of class to fly across the world to visit my then boyfriend (now husband on 19 years next week‼️) in Australia before he left for a health study tour visiting hospitals through India, Singapore, and Malaysia.

I could share a million stories, but here's the takeaway - please take advantage of an opportunity to study abroad! See the world, explore new places, learn from new people. Because I had Universidad de Benito Juarez on my resume, my first employer out of college created a role for me as a translator and interpreter for 22 Spanish-speaking families. Study abroad is hard, rewarding, and full of adventures!

As I flip through the alumni magazine for University of Louisville, I want high school students to think about their undergrad experience pointing them in a direction that could provide great clarity for a graduate level degree.

I took the GRE as a senior in college to buy me a 5-year window to get work experience and hopefully find an employer who would help me pay for my master's degree. The University of Louisville had one of the best Higher Education Administration programs in the country. It wasn't initially a route I saw coming, but I'm incredibly grateful I pursued it.

That break from school gave me more direction and purpose. And while my graduate school experience was radically different from my 3.5 years in undergrad, I loved the diversity of curriculum and educational experiences I gained.

High school students can put so much pressure on themselves to choose the one perfect fit that's going to determine the rest of their lives. A place can certainly shape you, but regardless of where you land, you are the common denominator and it's your decision to take full advantage of opportunities. So keep that in perspective and take the long view, as you think about how your decisions now can open doors for later. You might be surprised where your head and heart meet. ❤️
