People have a desire to be treated well. They want to be honored, they want to be seen, and they want to be recognized. The human element is real.

I vividly remember my grandfather’s death at a hospital near Nashville. He passed away after a long illness, peacefully, with his family at his side.

It was my job to notify the medical staff, and two nurses quickly arrived. But before they went to the bedside to pronounce his death, they stopped and hugged all three of us. They knew this was a human moment that required a human response—not a healthcare moment that required a clinical response.

By doing so, they made an absolutely horrible moment better.

In business, understanding the wants and needs of others isn’t quite so straightforward. But if we invest in building trust and respect in our relationships, those efforts will never be unrewarded.

Successful negotiations require both parties to view each other as people, not merely a means to an end.

When egos get in the way, negotiations fail.

Here are some common negotiation tactics. Which one do you encounter most often?

1. Bait and switch: “We’re sold out. How about this (more expensive) option?”
2. Lack of authority: “I’ll have to ask my boss for approval.”
3. Personal insults: This can include commenting negatively on your appearance, intelligence or integrity. It can also be more subtle, such as refusing to make eye contact.
4. Creating time pressure: “This offer is only good for 24 hours.”
5. Arranging the room to create an advantage: for example, asking someone to sit in a chair that is lower or unsteady.
6. Take it or leave it
7. Good cop, bad cop
