Sometimes learning looks like a lesson at a desk… and sometimes it looks like a game around a table. 🎲💛

Game play gives us a natural, meaningful way to practice so many important social-emotional skills -> taking turns, communicating with others, being flexible, handling disappointment, celebrating someone else’s success, asking for help, problem-solving, and navigating all the little emotions that can come with playing together.

Something magical happened this week… We arrived for our 4th work shift at Room In The Inn. Students led the way walking into the building, knowing exactly where to go. They sat down and confidently got to work. Our entire staff, as well as Room In The Inn’s staff, noticed how smooth and efficient the work shift went. Today was a beautiful reminder of just how capable our students are and how much they can achieve when given the opportunity to grow ❤️

Vocational Exploration at Hot Pink 💗 We received the warmest welcome! Got a tour, Q&A, job sampling, and ended our visit with tote bags and cookies. We were definitely pampered! Thank you so so much for opening your doors to us. Our visit helps make job exploration come to life. Please show Hot Pink some love for rolling out the red carpet for us!

I wrote a children’s book. 💛

Letters Light the Way was inspired by the incredible students I have the privilege of working with, and learning from.

Within the walls of BrightSteps, I have had the opportunity to witness the power of spelling as a form of communication. I’ve watched students who are nonspeaking or unreliably speaking share thoughts, feelings, humor, insight, and perspectives that others may never have known were there.

And once you see it - once you begin to learn, listen, and understand - it becomes very difficult to simply look the other way. Especially as an educator.

Students deserve educators who remain curious. Who presume competence. Who recognize that the ability to speak reliably is not the same thing as the ability to think, understand, feel, or have something meaningful to say.

I wrote Letters Light the Way to help spread awareness and encourage more people to look beyond speech and behavior - to recognize the intelligence, abilities, potential, and incredible capabilities that may not always be immediately visible.

This story is inspired by the students who continue to teach me what is possible when we believe there is more to hear. 💛
