Why is getting school districts to be driven by the theme of sustainability at every level?
Schools serve nearly one in every six Americans. And with 98,000 schools across the country, they are among the largest consumers of energy for public sector buildings. They also have 480,000 school buses, which is the largest mass transit fleet in the country. So schools have a big environmental footprint.
Not only do they have this outsized impact, but they also are the one place we can hope to alter the behavior, commitment and understanding of an entire generation! They will also carry that message home to their families who will begin the journey of REFUSE, REDUCE, REUSE. and RECYCLE! It gives kids reasons to engage as citizen scientists and to be part of solutions!
IT IS TIME for schools to step up!
