"Why is one octave higher 8'va' and two octaves higher 15'ma'?" A student asked me this in his lesson today, and I am somewhat ashamed to say that I did not know the answer! HOWEVER, I did promise to look it up for him and share next week, and this is what I found: 8va is an abbreviation for the Italian word "ottava" meaning "8th" and 15ma is an abbreviation for the Italian word "quindicesima" meaning "15th." There you go!
