Things Are Looking Up - JP Williams Our dear friend JP Williams always delivers outstanding performances with HOME BY DARK. We captured his classic "Things Are Looking Up" from a recent show in...

Ever since I started listening to the Beatles as a child, Blackbird has been one of my favorite songs. Perhaps it’s the simplicity of the production. Just Paul McCartney‘s voice, his guitar, and a click in the background to keep time. I’m always reminded of what doesn’t belong on a track rather than what needs to be added. If there had been more layers on top, it would’ve killed the vibe.

The subject matter has always meant a lot to me as well. If you live long enough, your wings, so to speak, can become broken. Maybe it’s the brokenness that allows us to eventually fly. Maybe it’s the wisdom gained from that brokenness That pushes us forward in the end. It’s up to the listener to determine what the song means to the individual. To me it means we’re always evolving. It also means that everyone around us is evolving too. There are those who don’t like to see others fly. They would prefer that they stay the same. I’ve always wanted to be the kind of person that enjoyed watching others spread their wings.

I’m spinning this year writing less and listening to songs that I appreciate on a more regular basis. Also taking the time to learn these songs. I love the guitar work on this composition. It gets you up and down the neck in a very unique way. It’s amazing to me, at such a young age, how these two songwriters created masterpieces. Where does that type of artistry come from? It’s unfathomable.

You will find a video of me singing this song recorded on my iPhone. Check back here on a regular basis for thoughts, my own songs, and songs written by others. Peace and love! JP. 01/31/2025

It was an honor to speak at today’s Leadership & Disability Conference at MTSU. The event promised “a different view of success, leadership and disability,” and it certainly delivered.
